NORMAN — After falling behind by a 1-0 mark in the first half, the Oklahoma women's soccer team put together a four-goal second-half performance to grab a 4-1 victory over No. 25 Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.
The match capped the Nike Sooner Classic and an undefeated weekend for the Sooners (1-0-1), who tied with No. 24 South Carolina on Friday night.
Scoring in the contest for the Sooners were sophomores Kaylee Dao, Angela Boyle and Jordan Hobart. All four of OU's goals came in a 27-minute stretch.
“I really liked our effort in both games to show the character to come back from one down and to go on and be somewhat of the aggressor," fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. "For sure today, I felt that we were the aggressor in the second half. The other team is sitting at one-nil, so we should be. The response of our team has been fantastic in the second half, both Friday and today.”
Both defenses were strong early on, with just three total shots through the first 20 minutes of action. The Sooners finished with 16 total shots to LMU's seven.
The Lions (0-1-1) got on the board in the 21st minute with a score from senior midfielder Nikki Martino.
In the second half, the Sooners came out and immediately applied more offensive pressure. The scoring broke open for the home team in the 61st minute after Dao headed in a cross from senior Liz Keester, who received the initial pass from junior Lizzie Luallin.
OU went on top in the 72nd minute on a headed in own goal from the Lions, and in the 78th minute, the Sooners stretched their lead when Boyle headed in the score off a corner kick from Keester, the first goal of Boyle's career.
The Sooners added to their lead even more when Hobart also scored her first career goal, sending one sailing from just outside the box into the left corner of the net.
In a full 90 minutes in goal, redshirt senior Kassidie Stade tallied four saves to just one goal allowed to improve to 1-0-1 on the season. LMU redshirt sophomore Charlee Pruitt recorded seven saves and fell to 0-1-1 on the year.
According to Potter, the weekend's results against two top-25 squads demonstrates that his team can rise to challenges.
“I think number one, it shows that we can compete, and if we can compete then we have a chance to perform, and if we perform we win games," Potter explained. "We've shown that we shouldn't have fear of anybody, but we've got many games to go and many challenges to go, so our goal is to enjoy today and go back to work tomorrow.”
Next weekend, the Sooners conclude a four-game, season-opening homestand, starting with a Bedlam, nonconference contest against Oklahoma State on Friday. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CT. This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of their program, which began in 1996.
