NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team held its annual Crimson 'N Cream match at McCasland Field House on Saturday morning with the cream side emerging victorious. Coach by first-year assistant Kristin Carpenter, the home team came from two sets down to win in five by scores of 22-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-23 and 15-11.
The cream team hit just .140 through the first two sets, but hit .302, .297 and .318 in the remaining three in the comeback victory. Redshirt-senior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) led the team with 21 kills and 14 digs in the double-double effort. Senior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) also notched a double-double with 18 digs and 16 kills. Junior middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas), who along with Ward is a Preseason All-Big 12 pick, chipped in with 16 kills on a team-high .308 hitting percentage.
For the crimson side, coached by second-year assistant Kyle Robinson, senior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrolton, Texas) led all players with 28 kills on a .407 attack rate. Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) was second among all players with 26 kills to go with 16 digs.
Redshirt-sophomore Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) was the crimson libero and tallied a match-leading 25 digs, while junior Emma Kelly (Houston, Texas) tied Gardiner at 18 for the team lead among the cream side. Sophomore setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) dished out 58 assists for the crimson, while freshman Ashley Brown (Prosper, Texas) posted 52 for cream. Brown and Kelly added three service aces apiece in the winning effort.
The Sooners open the regular season at home on Friday, August 26. Oklahoma hosts intrastate rival Oral Roberts at 7:00 pm in the OU Invitational.
