EUGENE, Ore. - Tyler Renton walked onto the javelin runway as a national newcomer and walked off as an All-American.
The senior finished 16th overall at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., to earn a second team honor and conclude his collegiate career.
Renton, OU's program record holder (252-2.00), finished with a 230-2.00 effort. His All-America honor capped off a successful season for the Sooner where he won his first Big 12 title and set the school record.
"Hats off to Tyler. He had a great career at Oklahoma," said head coach Jim VanHootegem. "He became a Big 12 champion this year and made it to his first NCAA meet. He went out and gave it his best and we're just thrilled that Tyler was a big part of our program. We're glad that he could walk away with some recognition."

Junior Dylan Blankenbaker had another memorable race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The junior found himself, once again, hitting the ground during a race, but this time it was not on his own volition.
With a few laps remaining, Blakenbaker (23rd - 8:58.03) stumbled over a runner who had fallen and was pushed from behind by another competitor. That forced the Sooner off the track onto the ground. He bounced back into the race but could not catch up as he fell into last place in his heat.
After the NCAA committee reviewed the video footage of the race, Blankenbaker was automatically advanced to the final on Friday at 7:54 p.m. (CT).
"Things happened so fast in the race. He clearly didn't get an opportunity to qualify for the final and the committee saw that and granted him the chance to compete in it," VanHootegem said. "We came here to make finals and Dylan's in the final so now he's got an opportunity."
The women's competition begins Thursday with five field event finals and all running semifinals.
Julia Reedy and Ashley Bryant open for the Sooners in the hammer throw at 4 p.m. (CT). Reedy earned first team All-America honors in 2015 after finishing fifth and recording a then-program record (211-4.00). The senior has a season-best 219-2.00, which is the current program standard. Bryant, a sophomore, will be making her national debut and is coming off a career PR performance of 203-2.00 at the regional meet.
Two-time All-American Liz Herrs will compete in the javelin at 7:45 p.m. The senior will cap her collegiate career vying for a national title after finishing third a season ago and 10th in 2014.
The final thrower in action for the Sooners on Thursday is Jess Woodard, who will compete in the shot put at 8:30 p.m. Woodard is making her second appearance in Eugene in as many years after competing in the discus in 2015. The sophomore also finished eighth in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championship earlier this year to earn her initial first team All-America honor.

Baileh Simms rounds out field competitors for the OU women in the long jump, slated for 8 p.m. Simms transferred to OU from Portland State in August. She advanced to the NCAA meet in the long jump in 2015 while at PSU. She finished 10th (19-9.50) at regionals to advance in 2016.
Action on the track opens at 6:32 p.m. (CT) with the Sooner quartet - Bianca Brazil, Ama Pipi, Daye Shon Roberson and Leya Buchanan - in the 4x100 relay. The foursome finished 10th at the regional meet, recording a 44.68 to advance. Last season, OU's 4x100 group missed the NCAA final by .05 seconds, placing ninth overall at the national meet.
The day will close with Pipi, Roberson, Daunicia Demerson and Payton Baker in the 4x400 relay. The group hopes to advance to the final round this season after finishing 23rd overall at the 2015 national meet. Their season best is a 3:32.95.
Pipi and Roberson are tripling on Thursday as each also has an individual race. Pipi makes her national debut in the 200 meter at 8:44 p.m. She ran a 23.20 PR at the regional meet to finish 11th to automatically qualify for nationals.
Roberson, a returning 400-meter All-American, will compete in the event at 8 p.m. She finished third a season ago running a 51.74. Her season and collegiate best is a 51.37.
"We want to put people in finals and we want people to compete for that. We train all year for this meet and I just hope we really go out and compete with passion."
Live results will be available at Flash Results. Action will be broadcast on ESPN channels each day of the meet (schedule below, all times are Central). Full recaps will be posted after the conclusion of competition each day on SoonerSports.com.
