LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oklahoma women's tennis team fell to No. 33 Kansas, 4-1, on the road Friday afternoon.
The Sooners (7-13, 2-6 Big 12) began the day by dropping the doubles point. At the No. 3 line, junior Mimi Fotopoulos and sophomore Malene Stripp fell, 6-0, to KU's Smith Hinton and Anastasiya Rychagova.
OU grabbed a win on court one as the 57th-ranked duo of senior Emma Devine and sophomore Lily Miyazaki defeated Nina Khmelnitckaia and Janet Koch, 6-2, to even doubles play.
The point came down to the No. 2 spot. OU's Christiana Brigante and Simran Sethi dropped a 7-5 decision to Maria Jose Cardona and Summer Collins to give Kansas (16-5, 6-2 Big 12) an early 1-0 lead.
Oklahoma's Miyazaki battled back on court one to even the score. The sophomore topped KU's Rychagova, 6-3, 6-3, to give OU its only point of the match.
At the No. 5 position, OU's Brigante fell to Jose Cardona, 6-4, 6-4. Kansas extended its leaad one court three as Fotopoulos fell, 6-3, 6-2, to KU's Koch.
The Jayhawks clinched the match with a victory at the No. 4 line. KU's Nina Khmelnitckaia won, 6-2, 6-4, over the Sooners' Sethi.
When play was suspended, OU's Devine had split sets, 4-6, 6-1, and was in a deciding third set with KU's Hinton. After dropping the opening set on court, Oklahoma's Malene Stripp led the Jayhawks' Collins 4-3 in the second set.
The Sooners are back in action Sunday as they close out Big 12 play at Kansas State. Match time is set for 11 a.m. CT.
