FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Oklahoma baseball team suffered an 11-3 loss at No. 7 TCU in front of 5,201 at Lupton Stadium on Friday night. The Sooners dropped to 18-16-1 overall and 4-6 in the Big 12, while the Horned Frogs improved to 25-8 and 7-3.
Games two and three will be played as a doubleheader on Saturday with games scheduled for 11:00 am and 3:00 pm first pitches.
A six-run bottom of the fourth blew open a game that was already a one-run lead for TCU. Oklahoma went to the bullpen to start the inning and senior right-hander Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) left with five runs in, two on and nobody out. The first seven batters of the inning reached, including six-consecutive hits of which five in a row drove in at least one run.
Catcher Evan Skoug drove in five runs in the first four innings as he hit a two-run homer in the first and a two-run double in the fourth. He finished the night 4-for-4 with a walk and was a triple shy of the cycle.
The Sooners answered Skoug's first-inning home run with a two-out, two-run rally in the top of the season. Oklahoma took advantage of a two-out error at shortstop with back-to-back RBI doubles from freshman center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) and freshman catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
The Horned Frogs regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a run on three hits as Skoug drove in his third of the day.
Freshman right-hander Luken Baker (3-1), who went 2-for-5 with a RBI at the plate, gave up three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.) took the loss in three innings of work as he left the game trailing by one. Madden (1-3) allowed three runs on six hits and a strikeout.
In relief, junior right-hander Alec Hansen (Loveland, Colo.) came on to give the Sooners four innings out of the bullpen. He surrendered two runs, one earned, on two hits and four walks, while striking out seven.
