Sideline-to-Sideline: Geno Lewis

Sideline-to-Sideline: Geno Lewis

NORMAN ? Dealing with the graduation of one of the best to ever play the receiver position for OU in Sterling Shepard, the Sooners will look to a talented and deep corps of pass-catchers to fill that void in 2016. One player fans are likely to hear about this spring is Penn State transfer Geno Lewis.

Following the same path that former Sooner Justin Brown took, Lewis comes to Norman as a graduate transfer from PSU. Lewis caught 90 passes for 1,181 yards and eight touchdowns in three years as a Nittany Lion. Oklahoma is hopeful that the 6-1, 201-pound Lewis can play the same role that Brown did in 2012: serve as a veteran presence and help a young group of receivers thrive with a proven quarterback.

Q: When you made the decision to transfer, what attracted you to OU?

A: "I told my high school coach I was thinking about transferring and he told me he would start contacting some schools. I didn't know too much about OU for a while, but my high school coach got back to me and told me they were very interested in me coming there. I did a little bit of research on the school and the players there. Obviously I had seen them play in the Playoff last year, so they were doing really well and I thought it would be a great opportunity to help this team get even farther than they did last year."

Q: Did you know much about Coach Riley or his offense at all?

A: "I never really met Coach Riley and I didn't know much about him. I watched the offense during the season-highlights and things like that-and it looked really exciting."

Q: Did you know Justin Brown at all and did you talk to him about his experience at OU?

A: "I did know him. My freshman year at Penn State he was there, but then he left and came to OU that same year. He and I are really close. We talk once in a while and keep in contact. He was definitely someone who I looked up to when I first got to Penn State. It was a blessing to have him to talk about OU and how it was. He told me that Coach (Bob) Stoops was a really good guy and that he would give me every opportunity. He said he really enjoyed his time here and it was a really good opportunity for him."

Q: In your limited time here, what have been your impressions of Baker Mayfield?

A: "It's been awesome. He is a work horse. He makes other guys better and I can see how determined he is to be great. You can just see that chip on his shoulder.

Q: And what have you seen from freshman Austin Kendall?

A: "Austin came in and is doing pretty well so far, especially with coming in and learning a new offense. I think he has picked it up really well since he has been here. He is working hard each and every day. I can just see him improving each and every day I have been here."

Q: What are your goals for the year?

A: "My goal is always to win. There is nothing else to it. Everything else will come itself. I don't say I want to have this many yards or that many touchdowns. At the end of the day I am here to help this team win. If I do what I am supposed to do and work hard, the rest will come."

Q: When Justin Brown was here he was able to help lead a younger group of receivers. What kind of leadership or veteran presence can you bring to this team?

A: "Before I got here I was with a young group of receivers. Coming here I can see some of the same things. There are some young guys with a lot of potential and talent that can be very successful. As the year goes they will mature, and I can see now - this being my fifth year - their mindset in their first couple years in college. I can definitely be a leader in this group both on and off the field; making sure everyone is doing the right things and making sure we are on the same page and just having a positive attitude in the receiver room."

Q: What are your best attributes and skills as a receiver on the field?

A: "I think I have really good ball skills. Jumping ability is pretty up there. Also, just my competitiveness. I know no matter what I am going to catch the ball and make the play no matter who is covering me."

Q: Is there a player in the NFL that you think is a good comparison for yourself or that you model your game after?

A: "One of the guys I watch a lot is Dez Bryant. I like the way he plays the game. He just plays so hard and with such a passion. I loves seeing that out of guys. I really like his game."

Q: Are you excited to be able to play in Coach Riley's up-tempo offense?

A: "I think this is going to be a great opportunity. I played in the spread in high school, so I'm coming back to my roots. I'm really excited and I know the sky is the limit for this offense."
