NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team sent its senior class out on a high note in its final home meet, rolling to a 197.775-195.775 victory over No. 18 Arizona on Senior Night Friday night inside Lloyd Noble Center.
Senior Keeley Kmieciak had an outstanding evening in her final career meet in the LNC, securing at least a share of three individual titles. Kmieciak recorded a season-best 39.625 in the all-around and also posted a season-high 9.9 on vault to claim both of those crowns.
On bars, Kmieciak split the title with teammate McKenzie Wofford with identical scores of 9.975. The mark was a career high for Kmieciak and matched Wofford's career-best total.
“I just think that all the emotions and stuff helped me perform at my best," Kmieciak said. "Using the crowd and everything, and I kind of worked off my teammates, too, they're so supportive. The fact that it's my senior night, I just wanted to give it my all and leave it all out on the floor.”
Junior Chayse Capps captured her seventh beam title of the season with a score of 9.95 and also scored a 39.600 in the all-around, and senior Haley Scaman claimed the individual honor on floor with a 9.95.
The Sooners (19-1 overall) took all four event titles in the meet, including on bars behind a program-best score of 49.675. Additionally, the team total was the fourth-best of the year for Oklahoma.
Kmieciak paced the Sooners on vault, soaring to a season-high 9.9 in the No. 3 slot, and junior Charity Jones started the meet on a strong note for the Sooners by posting a 9.875. In her season debut in the team lineup, senior Hunter Price contributed a 9.825. Capps, Scaman and sophomore AJ Jackson all also scored 9.825s on the event.
“Tonight was a little bit of an up-and-down night," OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. "Senior night, you're always wondering kind of how it's going to be. There are a lot of emotions running through, and I think sometimes you try a little harder than normal. What they have to remember is that a lot of this is muscle memory. They need to do what they do in practice every day.
"Sometimes, when they put too much effort into it, things change a little bit, and I think that was the case on vault—a little bit too much trying to stick instead of allowing and letting themselves to do the vaults that they're used to doing," Kindler continued. "We're still missing some sticks in that group, but I thought the first three in the lineup did a phenomenal job setting up the event—Charity, Hunter and Keeley. I would say three of their best vaults this season. That was really great."
After the first rotation, the Sooners took a 49.250-48.900 lead over the Wildcats, who started the meet on bars.
Fueled by four marks of at least 9.925, the Sooners rolled to a 49.675 on bars, their best total on the apparatus in program history. Kmieciak made her final bars routine inside the Lloyd Noble Center one to remember as she stuck her landing and earned a career-high 9.975. In the anchor spot, Wofford followed with another big routine, scoring a season-high and career-high-matching 9.975. Freshman Nicole Lehrmann and Capps added back-to-back marks of 9.925, Scaman contributed a 9.875 and Jackson recorded a 9.825.
“It started off strong and ended strong," Scaman said of OU's bars performance. "I think we focused on a lot of the little details that we've been working on in practice, and it just all came together today. It was awesome.”
The record-setting rotation gave OU a 98.925 to 97.750 advantage over the Wildcats, who scored a 48.850 on vault.
"On bars, what can you say about an incredible night like that? Really great landings from head to toe," Kindler said. "I think that we only missed two landings out of the six, which is great, and the other two were very small errors. This team on bars just seems to be getting stronger and stronger. They definitely are paying attention to detail, so that's good."
On beam, Capps anchored with a beautiful routine that scored her a 9.95, her ninth straight mark of at least a 9.9 on the event. Kmieciak opened the rotation with a season-high-matching 9.9, and sophomore Natalie Brown and Jones both added marks of 9.875. OU posted a 49.350 on the event to stretch the overall margin to 148.275-146.625 as the Wildcats tallied a 48.875 on floor.
"On balance beam, [there were] a couple of uncharacteristic routines… The rest of them, I thought were very solid," Kindler said. "Keeley, I would say her best beam routine of the year with that stuck double back. That's such a tough dismount to stick, so I thought that was really exciting to see. Chayse and Charity and Natalie [were] all in their usual form."
Scaman finished her home career in style by scoring a 9.95 in the anchor spot on floor. Capps and Jackson both tallied totals of 9.9. Brown and Jones each scored a 9.875, and Kmieciak contributed a solid 9.85 in her final home routine. For the rotation, the Sooners posted a 49.500, their fourth-best total of the season. The Wildcats closed the meet with a 49.150 on beam.
“I can't even put into words what this group means to our staff, our program, the university and their teammates," Kindler said of the seniors. "They are incredible women and have done a great deal for our program. We're going to miss them greatly, but there's a lot more gymnastics to do this year, so we have to refocus on that and put a plan in place to end their career in the best way possible.”
Next up, the Sooners hit the road to close the regular season at No. 7 UCLA. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. CT on Sunday, March 13, in Los Angeles, Calif., and will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
