OKLAHOMA CITY – Six of No. 13/14 Oklahoma's eight runs were unearned as OU (23-6) took advantage of four UMKC (8-16) errors as it completed a two-game sweep with an 8-4 win Saturday afternoon at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
It was a team effort as eight different Sooners collected a hit, seven scored a run and five had an RBI.
Leading the way were senior Erin Miller, sophomore Nicole Pendley and freshman Fale Aviu. Miller was 2-3 with an RBI double and now leads the team with 11 doubles and 14 multi-hit games this season. Aviu also had a multi-hit game as she was 2-3 with a run score. Pendley, meanwhile, aided the offense with a three-run home run.
Freshman Jayden Chestnut made her second career start and pitched well enough to improve her record to a perfect 5-0. She threw 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and allowed two runs on three hits and one walk.
Sophomore Paige Parker came on in relief to close out the game. She got the final six outs and gave up two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three.
The game hinged on the second inning early on as UMKC failed to convert on a scoring chance, while Oklahoma capitalized when given an opportunity.
With two out and two on in the top of the inning, Alexandra Friloux was awarded first base due to catcher's interference. That loaded the bases for Brooke Parker, but Chestnut struck her out on three pitches to keep the game scoreless.
Sophomore Lea Wodach got OU's portion of the second inning started when she reached safely due to an error by UMKC second baseman Kelsey Goodwin. Two batters later, Aviu went the other way with a 2-2 pitch for Oklahoma's first hit of the game.
The inning should have ended with a subsequent strikeout, but it was only out No. 2 due to the error earlier in the frame. Pendley made the Kangaroos pay for the mistake. Facing a full count, she drove the pitch over the wall in left-center for a three-run homer. It was her second home run of the season and No. 9 in her career.
Sophomore Kelsey Arnold kept the attack going with a single through the right side, and she moved up to second when Maegan Rollow couldn't handle it cleanly in right field. A bunt single from Miller moved Arnold to third, while freshman Sydney Romero pulled a single through the left side to drive in Arnold and push OU's lead to 4-0.
After a scoreless third, UMKC cut the Oklahoma lead in half in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-run single by Friloux. The Sooners got both of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, though.
Senior Kady Self led off with a single to left field. Goodwin then committed her second error of the game as she failed to cleanly handle a grounder from Pendley. After a foul-out, Miller drove a double to the wall in right field, bringing in Self.
Goodwin then made her second error of the inning and third of the game when she failed to catch a popup from Romero, allowing Pendley to score.
The Sooners added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Romero drew a one-out walk and scored when Knighten doubled to right center. After reaching third on a wild pitch, Knighten scored when senior Paris Townsend entered as a pinch hitter and singled back up the middle.
UMKC scored twice in the top of the seventh off Parker, but it was too little, too late.
Oklahoma returns to ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Wednesday night when it opens Big 12 play against Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
