LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Oklahoma baseball team suffered a 13-7 setback to Texas Tech as it was swept in its Big 12-opening series in front of 4,432 at Rip Griffin Park on Saturday afternoon. The Sooners, who have lost four in a row, dropped to 11-13-1 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while the Red Raiders improved to 16-7 and 5-1.
Oklahoma plated three runs in the top of the first and second innings to lead 6-1 before Texas Tech rattled off 12 consecutive runs between the third and fifth innings.
The Red Raiders cut into the Sooners' lead with a third straight single to make it 6-2 and get the scoring started in a five-run third. Senior right-hander Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) was chased after walking a batter to load the bases with nobody out and a run in. Junior right-hander JB Olson (Shady Shores, Texas) got a sacrifice-fly that cut the OU lead to three, but Tech third baseman Ryan Long followed with a two-run single to cut the lead to one. The game-tying run came in to score on a groundout to second off the bat of pinch-hitter Tyler Fowler.
Texas Tech took its first lead of the day with a four-run fourth. Shortstop Orlando Garcia provided the big knock, a two-run single, after Long put the Red Raiders in front with a bases loaded-squeeze bunt.
In the first, junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) put Oklahoma in front with a double to right-center after freshman third baseman Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) and sophomore second baseman Kyle Mendenhall (Carlsbad, Calif.) set the table with back-to-back singles. Junior first baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) added a run on a sacrifice-fly and freshman center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) plated a run on a single to right.
Tech got a run back in the bottom of the first as right fielder Stephen Smith lined a leadoff-double and scored on a groundout to first by center fielder Tanner Gardner. The Sooners got the offense going again in the top of the second with a one-out double down the left field line by freshman catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Mendenhall then drove him in with a single to right, Harris scored on a wild pitch and errant throw to third and Neuse drove in a second run with his second double to right-center.
Lefty Hayden Howard (5-1) got the win in 3.2 innings of shutout relief for Texas Tech. He scattered four hits and a walk to go with two strikeouts. Right-hander Ryan Moseley picked up his first save of the year in a three-inning effort. He allowed one unearned run without giving up a hit, but walked three.
Freshman right-hander Connor Berry (Sugar Land, Texas) got the loss for the Sooners as he was the third OU pitcher of the day. Berry (0-2) surrendered four runs on two hits and a walk in one inning.
Hernandez pitched two-plus innings and allowed five runs on five hits and two walks in the start. Righty Ty Harpenau lasted just 1.1 innings in the start as he gave up five runs on five hits and a walk.
Oklahoma returns to action on Tuesday, March 29 at Little Rock to wrap up its 10-game road swing in 15 days.
