LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Oklahoma baseball team dropped its third straight as it lost on consecutive nights at Texas Tech, 6-1, in front of 4,014 at Rip Griffin Park on Friday night. The Sooners fell to 11-12-1 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders lifted their record to 15-7 and 4-1.
Texas Tech pushed across a single run in the first and second to stake and early 2-0 lead against freshman right-hander Chris Andritsos (The Woodlands, Texas). The Red Raiders then got their big inning with three runs in the fifth. After one out was recorded, back-to-back singles chased Andritsos from the game. Junior right-hander JB Olson (Shady Shores, Texas) entered and walked three in a row, including two with the bases loaded. An RBI-groundout pushed the Tech lead to 5-0.
Oklahoma got its only run of the ball game in the top of the sixth. Senior left fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) hit a leadoff-single to center. Junior catcher Renae Martinez (San Pedro, Calif.) failed to successfully sacrifice Haley to second as the TTU catcher pounced on the ball in front of the plate and threw out Haley. A pair of wild pitches would move Martinez to third where he scored on a RBI-groundout to the right side off the bat of junior third baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.).
Texas Tech got the OU run back immediately as right fielder Stephen Smith crushed a leadoff-home run over the left field wall to push the score to its final 6-1.
Andritsos (3-2) took the loss in 4.1 innings of work for the Sooners. He allowed four runs on seven hits and one while to go with three strikeouts. Lefty Steven Gingery (2-1) pitched seven innings of one-run ball to lead the Red Raiders to victory. He scattered three hits and two walks as he allowed one run and fanned six.
Oklahoma and Texas Tech take the field again for the series finale Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm.
