NORMAN – No. 13/14 Oklahoma (22-6) posted its ninth run-rule win of the season and its 11th shutout as the Sooners beat UMKC (8-15) in five innings Friday night, 10-0, at Marita Hynes Field.
OU used a pair of four-run innings to improve to 5-0 all-time against the Kangaroos. In addition, seven of the team's 11 hits went for extra bases as OU pounded out four doubles, two home runs and one triple.
Freshman Caleigh Clifton went 3-3 with three runs scored to set career highs in both categories. She also had an RBI. With a double Friday night, nine of her 18 hits this season have now gone for extra bases (seven doubles, two triples).
Sophomore Nicole Pendley also had a multi-hit game as she was 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Fellow sophomore Paige Parker earned her 10th win of the season and is now 10-3 on the year. She struck out eight with one walk and allowed five hits to record her fifth shutout of the season.
Parker opened the game by striking out the side and also recorded three strikeouts in the fourth.
After a scoreless first inning, UMKC threatened in the top of the second by getting a pair of runners on with two outs, but freshman Sydney Romero fielded a ground ball at third and stepped on the base for the force out.
Oklahoma didn't miss its scoring chance in the second, however.
With one out, Clifton hit a high pop up in the infield. With a swirling wind, the ball was misjudged by UMKC's third baseman Alex Gale, allowing Clifton to reach second after the ball dropped in. Senior Kady Self then hit a more conventional double with a shot to the gap in left-center, putting OU on top 1-0.
The Kangaroos had another opportunity in the third inning to tie the game or take the lead, putting runners in scoring position with two outs. Parker kept the 'Roos off the board, though with a strikeout to end the inning.
The Sooners broke the game open in the bottom of the frame with a four-run third.
With one out, freshman Shay Knighten doubled to right center on the first pitch she saw. After a walk to Parker, Clifton was at it again as she singled up the middle to drive in Knighten. Now up 2-0, Pendley doubled the lead two batters later with a double to the right field corner. Senior Tori Nirschl then got in on the act with an RBI single to left field, bringing home Pendley to make it 5-0 for OU.
Freshman Sydney Romero led off the fourth inning with an absolute no-doubt home run to left field. Her fourth home run of the season came on an 0-1 pitch and cleared both fences to leave the stadium.
OU then ended the game with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Clifton notched her third hit of the contest with a leadoff single. Senior Paris Townsend pinch hit next and was hit by a pitch. Pendley collected her second hit by sending a slow roller up the first base line and avoiding the tag to reach safely.
Freshman Fale Aviu ended the contest with her first career grand slam. After taking a ball, she went the other way with the offering and put it into the bleachers in left center. It was her sixth home run of the season, tying Knighten and Wodach for most on the team.
OU and UMKC have one more game to go in the series, but it won't be played at Marita Hynes Field. Instead, the two teams will meet at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and the game will be shown on Fox Sports Oklahoma Plus and Fox College Sports Central.
