NORMAN - The Oklahoma quarterback room will look much different in 2016 with the transfer of Trevor Knight and with Cody Thomas focusing on baseball. One fresh face will be Texas A&M transfer Kyler Murray.

Murray, an Allen, Texas, native, will redshirt this season due to NCAA transfer rules. As a freshman for the Aggies, Murray saw action in eight games, including three starts against South Carolina, Auburn and Western Carolina. He held a .595 completion percentage on the season and threw for five touchdowns and rushed for one. Murray also averaged 6.3 yards per rush, which was the most on the team among players who totaled at least 20 carries.

Murray will spend the season learning under the tutelage of standout Baker Mayfield, in hopes of competing to be the Sooners' quarterback in 2017.

Q: What has your transition to Oklahoma been like so far?

A: “I didn't know how well it was going to go, but I had a good feeling about it.  Coach (Bob) Stoops told me the team was a good team, and the first week I was here I was surprised how engaged they were with me.  The first week I was here I felt at home and I felt like it was the right place to be.  I felt like everything worked out and so far I love it.”

Q: You have a few former high school teammates on the team. Have they helped make your transition smooth?

A: “Oh yeah, moving in, I live with Bobby Evans, he was my tackle at Allen (High School), Tay Evans and Lee Morris, so obviously I know a lot of these guys. A lot of these guys are from Texas so it was good to know some guys.”

Q: What appealed to you about coming to Oklahoma when you decided you wanted to transfer?

A: “Coach Riley, Coach Stoops, really just the entire coaching staff showed interest in me. Oklahoma is always a winning team, a great place to be, and obviously the guys on the team are great.”

Q: What has it been like working with a quarterback like Baker Mayfield so far this spring?

A: “Baker's a great dude. This is a good year for me to obviously sit out and learn from him and learn from Coach Riley.  I can't wait for the season to start so that I can sit back and watch and soak it all in for next year.”

Q: You're redshirting next year, but how can you still contribute to the team from the sidelines and in practice?

A: “I just want to provide leadership and instill that drive to win.  Through winter workouts I think everybody has seen that I have a good work ethic. I hope I've showed that.  It's about having trust in the coaches and all the players around me.  Come time for season, being on the sidelines with the team wherever that is, hopefully they'll trust me when that time comes.”

Q: What have been your early impressions of the OU offense and do you think you're a good fit?

A: “I believe so.  It's a very explosive offense.  We have a lot of weapons, a lot of weapons in the receivers, the receiving corps.  And we have lot of great backs obviously.”

Q: You guys lost one of your top receivers last season in Sterling Shepard. Have you seen any guys step up or stand out this spring?

A: “We have a lot of great receivers. I think we have a lot of guys that can step up.  We have DeDe Westbrook, A.D. Miller and Jeffery Mead. They've all been here and they know the ropes. Mark Andrews is a big target and it helps when you have two NFL backs in the backfield with Baker (Mayfield). The future is bright.”

Q: Is there anything you want OU fans to know about you?

A: “I just love to play football and baseball.  I love to compete. I can't wait to play here, and I can't wait to hopefully leave a legacy here.”

Q: What's been your favorite part about living in Norman so far? Do you have any favorite places to go?

A: “I'm a Chipotle guy, but I think they have one of those everywhere. A lot of people don't know me, which is pretty fun.  It's an underrated place I feel like.  A lot of people think Norman is just a small town, but it's a lot of fun.”

Q: Are there any NFL quarterbacks you think you are similar to or try to model your game after?

A: “I like Russell Wilson because of his stature and how he handles himself off of the field and on the field. I'm a Tom Brady guy because he's just that good. I like Cam (Newton), Aaron Rodgers, there's a lot.”
