LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Oklahoma baseball team was shut out, 5-0, in its Big 12 Opener against Texas Tech in front of 3,231 at Rip Griffin Park on Thursday night. The Sooners evened their record at 11-11-1 and 0-1 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders improved to 14-7 and 3-1.
Junior right-hander Alec Hansen (Loveland, Colo.) got two quick outs in the bottom of the first before running into trouble. After back-to-back singles and a stolen base put two runners in scoring position, TTU first baseman Eric Gutierrez reached on an infield-single to third that scored the first run of the night. Hansen (0-4) then walked three consecutive batters to push across two more runs.
Hansen was lifted for senior right-hander Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) Hernandez walked one to charge another run to Hansen before getting through the inning with OU down 4-0 after one.
The Sooners would not recover as they totaled just four hits on the night to the Red Raiders' six. Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) went 2-for-4 and freshman center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) extended his hit streak to eight games in a 1-for-4 effort.
Texas Tech right-hander Davis Martin (3-0) pitched six-scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and struck out seven. Lefty Hayden Howard picked up a three-inning save for his first of the year. He allowed just one hit, two walks and struck out five.
In relief, freshman right-hander Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.) tossed five innings of one-run ball for OU. He gave up one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out a pair.
Game two is set for 6:30 pm Friday night. Freshman right-hander Chris Andritsos (The Woodlands, Texas) gets the ball for Oklahoma against lefty Steven Gingery.
