NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team fired a team-tournament-best 286 (+2) in the third and final round of the Hurricane Invitational to finish in eighth place in its spring opener with a 872 (+20). The 16-team tournament was played at the par-71, 6,080-yard Biltmore Golf Course in Miami, Fla.

The tournament marked the Sooners' lowest 54-hole score of the season, beating the previous best of 884 by 12 strokes. No. 7 Northwestern won the event with an impressive 24-under-par 828. No. 16 Iowa State placed second at 281 (-3) and host-school Miami finished in third, posting an 854 (+2).

Hannah Wood was the highest OU finisher in the event, sharing 11th place out of 90 competitors. The sophomore added a 72 (+1) in Wednesday's round to a 70 and 71 for a 213 (E). Wood has placed in the top 20 in all five 2015-16 tournaments and the finish marks the 11th top-20 showing of her career.

Classmate Valerie Tanguay saved her best round for last, firing a 70 (-1) in Wednesday's final round. The sophomore, who pocketed three birdies on the day, tied for 24th place after carding a season-best 217 (+4).

OU sophomore Ana Ruiz also posted a tournament-best 70 (-1) in the third round to finish tied for 36th place with a 220 (+7).

Freshman Karen Arimoto tallied a 76 (+5) on Wednesday for a three-round 224 (+11), sharing 55th place with sophomore Rylee Pedigo, who registered a round-three 74 (+3).

OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she was happy with how the team progressed over the offseason.

“We played much better in today's round,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “There are a ton of positives we can take away from this tournament. I'm really proud of the way we played today. The positive energy was contagious and I believe it helped us bounce back.”

The Sooners return to the course on March 11-13 in Mesa, Ariz., for the 2016 Clover Cup.
