CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The top-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics team wrapped up a perfect regular season with a 444.750-433.050 win over No. 5 Illinois on Saturday afternoon in Champaign, Ill. OU enters the postseason with a record of 13-0 and has won 39 straight dating back to the 2015 season opener.

“It was a nice steady performance other than being a little shaky on high bar,” head coach Mark Williams said. “We did a good job on the road and finished up the regular season in good shape. We are looking forward to the next challenge of the postseason.”

The Sooners posted the highest team score on every event but pommel horse and OU gymnasts took home four event titles and the all-around. Senior Kanji Oyama shared the event title on floor (15.250), junior Allan Bower snagged the meet's top score on vault (15.100) and also took home the all-around (89.700), freshman Yul Moldauer put up a 16.000 on parallel bars to tie his career high and grab the event title and senior Josh Yee won high bar with a 14.700.

As the visiting team, OU opened the meet on pommel horse, where it totaled a team score of 73.500, its third-highest of the year. Bower led the way for the Sooners, posting 15.300 . Moldauer and Resnick also turned in strong routines, scoring 14.800 and 15.100, respectively. Moldauer's total was just .050 off his career high. After the first rotation, and with Illinois having started on floor, OU trailed by just one tenth.

The Sooners moved to floor in the second rotation. The event, which has been OU's strongest this season, was once again kind to Williams' bunch. All five Sooners scored above the 15-point mark en route to a team total of 75.650. Oyama paced Oklahoma with a 15.250 while Moldauer scored 15.150 and Justus and Anderson both totaled 15.100. After the second rotation, OU was back on top, leading Illinois 149.150-148.100.

On vault, the Sooners turned in a team total of 74.100 to extend their lead at the halfway point of the meet. The back half of the order was the strongest for OU. Anderson scored a 14.700 while Oyama (15.000) and Bower (15.100) both topped the 15-point mark.

With a lead of just under two points, Oklahoma moved to rings for the fourth rotation. All five Sooners scored at least 14.950 with four topping the 15-point mark to push OU to a team total of 75.400 on the event. Moldauer paced the Sooners, scoring 15.200 at the No. 3 spot. Justus (15.150), Oyama (15.000) and Hoang (15.100). OU's bested Illinois' team total on rings by nearly two full points, stretching the Sooner lead to 298.650-294.350 after four frames.

Oklahoma struggled on high bar, turning in a 70.700 as a team. The Sooners' best score came from Yee, who totaled a meet-high 14.700. Anderson pitched in a 14.650 and Bower anchored the rotation with a stuck dismount to earn a 14.300. Moldauer and Suzuki both scored in the 13s for Oklahoma. Despite its difficulties on high bar, OU led the Illlini 369.350-363.700 with only one rotation remaining.

“We are better on parallel bars than we are on high bar for sure,” Williams said. “We have some work to do on high bar to make it comparable to our other events. We will have to better on that event if we want to succeed in the postseason the way I would like.

The Sooners rebounded in the final rotation, scoring 75.400 on parallel bars to cap the day and clinch the meet 444.750-433.050. Moldauer turned in the best routine of the day, scoring the second 16.000 of his career to tie his personal best. OU also saw high marks from Resnick (15.300) and Bower (15.000).

“We have put ourselves in a good position,” Williams said. “The postseason is a little bit of a different time. Everything matters and it's for real championships. We have to prepare for that and go in with the intent that the last three meets of our year are when we peak.”

With the regular season complete, the Sooners will have a week off as they prepare to defend their conference crown at the MPSF meet on Saturday, April 2 in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford University. The Sooners have won four straight MPSF titles and have taken the conference crown in 13 of Williams' 16 years at OU.
