FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 13/14 Oklahoma (18-6) was done in by a costly third inning as it fell to Cal State Fullerton (21-9) Friday night at the Easton Tournament, 7-5.
The Sooners held a 3-0 lead through two innings, but the Titans rallied for six runs in the bottom of the third en route to handing OU its first road loss of the season. The Sooners helped Fullerton in the inning by committing two errors and issuing five walks.
Sophomore Paige Parker issued a season-high four walks and allowed six runs, four earned, as her record dropped to 7-3 on the season. She struck out three and walked four.
The start looked promising as OU scored three runs in the first inning, though the lead could have been bigger as OU left the bases loaded in the inning.
With one out, senior Erin Miller singled through the left side and reached third when sophomore Lea Wodach hit a bloop single to right field. After Wodach stole second, a passed ball allowed Miller to score the game's opening run and move Wodach to third.
A fielding error allowed freshman Sydney Romero to reach safely, while a walk to Parker filled the bases. After a lineout, sophomore Nicole Pendley drew a five-pitch walk to make it 2-0. Senior Kady Self then extended the lead to 3-0 when she singled through the left side. OU looked to add more but a strike out ended the inning.
The lead would last until the aforementioned third inning.
Delynn Rippy walked after a seven pitch at-bat, moved to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a single by Samantha Vandiver. An error allowed Fullerton to get on the board, while another walk filled the bases. After a strikeout, Courtney Rodriguez and Sydney Colenzo drew back-to-back walks to tie the game at 3-3.
Starting pitcher Desiree Ybarra then entered the batting lineup and delivered a key two-run single to right field to put the Titans ahead 5-3. Later in the inning, a second OU error allowed what turned out to be the winning run to score.
After a scoreless fourth, OU fought back in the fifth and cut the deficit to just one run.
Romero reached for the second time in the game because of an error to lead it off. The bases then became loaded when Parker walked for the second time and freshman Fale Aviu singled up the middle. Pendley went back up the middle on an 0-1 pitch to drive in Romero, making it 6-4. After a force out at the plate, freshman Caleigh Clifton was hit by a pitch to bring in a fifth Oklahoma run.
Cal State Fullerton added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, and the Sooners went down in order in the seventh to end it.
Oklahoma continues play at the Easton Tournament Saturday. The Sooners face Grand Canyon for the first time ever at 3:30 p.m. CT before meeting No. 6/6 Alabama at 6 p.m. CT.
