LAS VEGAS – The Oklahoma women's tennis team fell to No. 59 UNLV, 5-2, on the road Wednesday.
The Sooners (5-7) began the day by winning the doubles point inside the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Sophomore duo Malene Stripp and Simran Sethi finished first, losing their match at No. 3, 6-1, to UNLV's Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga.
Oklahoma's Zita Engbroks and Christiana Brigante prevented the doubles point loss, beating Anna Bogoslavets and Mercedes Lopez Velez, 6-1, at No. 2. The clinching point came on court one, when sophomore Lily Miyazaki and senior Emma Devine beat the Rebels' Carol ZiYang and Aiwen Zhu, 6-3.
The Rebels (16-0) took the first three singles matches. At No. 6, Stripp fell to UNLV's Kotseva, 6-2, 6-2. On court four, Brigante dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to UNLV's Bogoslavets. OU's No. 84 Devine was defeated, 6-3, 6-2, by Zhu.
Oklahoma won at the No. 5 line as Sethi defeated the Rebels' Cristina Moroi, 6-4, 6-2. No. 89 Miyazaki was dropped, 7-6, 6-2, by No. 63 Zi Yang on court one. With the match in hand, the Rebels' capped the victory with a win at the No. 3 line, as UNLV's Paola Artiga beat Mimi Fotopoulos, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0.
The Sooners are back in action Friday as they host Iowa State at 5 p.m. at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
