COLUMBUS, Ohio – The top-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics team made a big statement in its road win over No. 3 Ohio State and No. 10 Air Force on Friday night in Columbus, Ohio. The Sooners topped the 450-point mark for the second meet in a row, scoring a 451.250, the fourth-highest total in NCAA history.
Oklahoma is still the only team to have ever topped 450 points in NCAA competition, having done so three times a year ago and twice so far in 2016. Friday's 451.250 marked the first time the Sooners have hit the historic mark outside of Norman.
“I thought we competed consistently and put things together the whole way through," head coach Mark Williams said. "We were pushed a little bit by Ohio State. Knowing they may be the second-best team out there put a little bit more pressure on us. At this point we have to just keep going and stay healthy. Hopefully we will be totally healthy when we get back for NCAAs.
The Sooners started the meet on pommel horse, which has been their lowest scoring event this year. Oklahoma set the tone for the meet early, notching five routines of at least 14.750 to earn a team score of 74.300, its second highest of the year. OU was led by a 14.850 from freshman Yul Moldauer that tied his career high and a 15.050 from junior Allan Bower in the anchor spot. After the first rotation, the Sooners already led both the Buckeyes, who had started on floor (a much higher scoring event), and the Falcons, who started on rings.
In the second rotation, Oklahoma moved to rings. The Sooners have been dominant on rings in 2016, leading the nation with a three-score average of 76.200. Friday night was no different as the Sooners distanced themselves from the field with a team mark of 76.250, again their second-highest total of the year. All five OU competitors scored in the 15s, while senior Thao Hoang (15.500), Moldauer (15.350) and sophomore Hunter Justus (15.300) led the way for the Sooners.
Oklahoma struggled a bit on floor, turning in five solid routines, but posting a 74.300, its lowest total on the event of the year. Still, that mark was higher than the totals of both Ohio State and Air Force. Justus (15.050) and junior Colin Van Wicklen (15.200) both cracked the 15-point mark for OU. At the halfway point, the Sooners led second-place Ohio State by just eight tenths of a point.
OU rebounded on parallel bars, scoring a meet-high 75.850 on the event. The Sooners' last four competitors all stuck their dismounts, accounting for eight extra tenths. Bower scored a solid 15.050, senior Sergey Resnick turned in a huge 15.500 and just as he has all year, Moldauer anchored parallel bars with a world class routine, scoring 15.800. With the big rotation on parallel bars, the Sooners stretched their lead to more than two and half points over the second-place Buckeyes.
The Sooners rolled that momentum into the fifth rotation. On high bar, the Sooners got four routines of at least 14.950 to earn a season-high 75.100. Senior Josh Yee paced OU with a career-best 15.300, Van Wicklen turned in a 15.200 and freshman Levi Anderson scored 15.000. Entering the final rotation, Oklahoma led by more than four points.
Oklahoma would not let that lead slip away. The Sooners posted 75.450 on vault in the final rotation, their best total since scoring 76.100 at the Rocky Mountain Open. OU got stuck dismounts from Hoang (15.000) and Anderson (career-high 15.300) to push them to the finish. When the chalk had settled, the Sooners' big night on vault was enough to propel them past the 450 mark once again.
The road swing continues for Oklahoma next weekend, as they head to No. 5 Illinois for their regular season finale. That meet is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 19 and will be broadcast on the Big 10 Network. The Sooners will return to Columbus in April for the NCAA Championships.
“Having meets on the road is good preparation for going into the post season,” Williams said. “It is just a little different competing away from your fan base and what is familiar. It's good for us to experience that going into the most important part of the season. We'll forge on and keep doing what we do.”
