NORMAN — With four weeks of competition in the books, the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team remains the top-ranked squad in the nation. The Sooners began the year at No. 1 in the Collegiate Gymnastics Association (CGA) Coaches Poll and have retained the top spot in each of the ensuing five polls.
At the halfway point of the regular season, OU boasts the highest scoring average in the country with a team mark of 446.900. The Sooners' average is more than six points better than second-place Stanford (440.590) and is 14 points ahead of third-place Minnesota (432.525).
The Sooners also own the nation's highest team score of the year, totaling 448.550 at the Rocky Mountain Open to begin their 2016 season. Oklahoma's first four team scores of the year rank first (448.55), third (447.450), fourth (447.400) and sixth (444.400) highest in the nation, respectively.
As a team, Oklahoma ranks first in the nation in scoring average on all six events and has recorded the nation's highest scores of the year on floor (77.900), rings (74.400) and vault (76.100).
Depth has paved the way for the OU's dominance thus far. Six Sooners rank in the top 10 nationally in the all-around, including three in the top five. Freshman Yul Moldauer, who leads Oklahoma with eight event titles, is OU's highest ranked all-arounder at No. 2, with an average mark of 89.350 and a season high of 90.150.
Moldauer also leads the nation in scoring on parallel bars with an average mark of 15.700. His nation-high 16.000 on the event in the Sooners' road meet against Michigan is one of just two 16-point routines in the country this year. The freshman also ranks fifth on floor (15.475), sixth on rings (15.117) and sixth on high bar (14.812).
A testament to their aforementioned depth, the Sooners litter the individual rankings on every apparatus. Oklahoma has nine gymnasts that rank in the top 10 on at least one event. Junior Colin Van Wicklen leads the Sooners on floor (3rd – 15.550), junior Allan Bower leads on pommel horse (2nd – 15.050) and vault (15.138), junior Thao Hoang on rings (15.162), senior Josh Yee on rings (5th - 14.825) and Moldauer on parallel bars.
The Sooners are idle this week and will return to action next weekend as select members of the squad head to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the 2016 Winter Cup. Gymnasts from across the country will compete individually at the event, held Feb. 18-20, vying for spots on the U.S. national teams.
