DENTON, Texas — Fueled by its fourth-highest floor score in school history and junior Chayse Capps' program-best all-around score, the No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team exploded for a season-best 197.925 and a first-place finish against No. 10 Auburn, Illinois State and Texas Woman's University on Friday night. The quad meet was held inside Kitty Magee Arena on TWU's campus.
The Sooners (12-1 overall) swept the individual event titles as they finished first ahead of Auburn (196.825), Illinois State (191.975) and TWU (191.550). OU's team score from Friday is the eighth-best in school history.
“Our goal tonight was to be very unified from beginning to end," OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. "Something we were wanting to work on was to be just a hair more aggressive on beam. I felt we were. We had a new beam lineup tonight and I thought they did a phenomenal job with those changes. Sometimes when you shake things up like that you're concerned about how your team will handle it, but they were super aggressive. I was really excited to see that.”
Capps shined in the meet, taking at least a share of four titles on bars, beam, floor and in the all-around. The Plano, Texas, native claimed the all-around title with a career-high 39.775, which is the best in OU program history and matches the highest score in the country so far this season.
On beam, Capps nailed her routine for the first 10.0 of her career. The perfect mark was the fourth in school history on the apparatus and the first since Erica Brewer scored one on March 6, 2015. She also added a career-best 9.975 on floor and added a season-high 9.9 on vault.
“Chayse Capps, what can you say? When you have the best all-around in program history – it is so hard to break records these days and for her to be able to do that, it's amazing really. Then to tie the best in the country this season, that is just a feather in her cap,” Kindler said.
"Tonight was great in general," Capps shared. "The team atmosphere was incredible as well as a lot of the scores. We were knocking away those little bitty details that we were looking for tonight so I think the highlights were of course with the five stuck landings, floor was the fourth-highest in program history. It was an incredible feeling when I got my 10 and then another high for me on floor and also all-around."
Senior Keeley Kmieciak shared the bars title with Capps with a 9.9, while senior Haley Scaman secured the vault crown with a 9.925.
The Sooners started off the night strong with a 49.400 on bars, grabbing a .350 advantage over Auburn and leading TWU by .825 and Illinois State by .950 after the first rotation. OU was paced on the event by the pair of 9.9s from Kmieciak and Capps. In the leadoff position, sophomore AJ Jackson set the tone with a stuck landing, earning a career-best-matching 9.875. Junior McKenzie Wofford also tallied a 9.875 in the anchor spot, while freshman Nicole Lehrmann and Scaman added marks of 9.85 and 9.825, respectively.
"We started off so hot on bars with five stuck dismounts out of six," Kindler said. "That's a championship performance and that's something we've worked very hard on. It's nice to see those practice routines performed in the meet.”
On beam, OU tallied a season-best 49.425, fueled by Capps' 10.0 in the anchor position. Junior Natalie Brown recorded a 9.9 for the Sooners in the No. 4 spot, while Lehrmann added a 9.875. In her debut in the OU lineup, sophomore Stefani Catour contributed a 9.825 for the Sooners. Jones also scored a 9.825, and Kmieciak posted a 9.8 in the leadoff spot.
The Sooners kept the momentum rolling on floor, soaring to a season-best 49.650. Kmieciak, Brown and Capps all set or tied their career highs on the event. Kmieciak opened the rotation with a career-best-matching 9.9, while Brown also tied her career high with a 9.925. Capps continued her incredible night as she exploded for a career-best 9.975. Jones tallied a 9.925 in the No. 4 slot, and Jackson added a 9.875. In the anchor spot, Scaman contributed a season-high-matching 9.925.
“Floor – what an amazing performance, we could have actually done even better," Kindler stated.
The vault rotation meant another season-best mark for OU as it scored a 49.450. Scaman led the Sooners on the event with a 9.925. Jones opened the vault rotation with a 9.9, matching her career best, and freshman Alex Marks followed her with a career-high 9.85. Capps closed her night with a season-high 9.9, and Jackson tallied a 9.875.
“Vault definitely could have been sharper for us," Kindler said. "We've had better landings this season. They were dynamic, but we definitely need to reel in some of those landings.”
