NORMAN ? The 2016 University of Oklahoma football recruiting class produced signees from all across the country as the Sooners inked players from 13 states and Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. In total, Oklahoma announced 19 signees on the first day of the college football National Letter of Intent signing period.
OU's 2016 class is comprised of 15 high schoolers and four junior college players, encompassing eight different positions. Twelve of the 19 are ranked as four-star recruits by at least one major recruiting service and one ? outside linebacker Caleb Kelly ? is a five-star prospect. Kelly announced his decision Wednesday night. The class also includes five three-star signees.
"I love the class," said head coach Bob Stoops, who has won nine Big 12 titles in his 17 years at OU. "We really are meeting our needs everywhere. Looking at my offensive and defensive master sheet, we're right on target of where we need to be. We're very close to being right at 85 scholarships.

"It's a class that really covers the country, from East Coast to West (Coast). With having a national brand, we continue to do well all over the country and I felt like we did again this year."
The state of Texas produced the most signees for the Sooners with three, followed by Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana and California with two student-athletes each. The Sooners also signed one player each from Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
"It is really a strong class academically as well, and to me that matters along with size and speed and all of that," said Stoops. "The academic success and the players' academic backgrounds translate into better and more consistent play. It's better leadership on your team.
"We want guys who are serious about their business. Guys who are serious about going to school and being team guys that play hard and physical. The off-the-field stuff is just that they are serious about their success and they want to work and compete for whatever they are going to get."
The 18th signing class under Stoops features five offensive linemen, four linebackers, three defensive backs, two defensive ends and two wide receivers, along with one quarterback, one running back and one athlete.
Five of the 19 signees were early enrollees and are already on campus in Norman and attending classes. They are offensive linemen Ashton Julious, Ben Powers and Logan Roberson, quarterback Austin Kendall and defensive back Chanse Sylvie. Transfers Kyler Murray (quarterback from Texas A&M) and Geno Lewis (wide receiver from Penn State) are also on campus. Murray was the 2014-15 National Gatorade Football Player of the Year as a senior at Allen (Texas) High School while Lewis caught 90 passes for 1,181 yards and eight touchdowns in three seasons at Penn State.
"I feel great about the staff and the way they worked," concluded Stoops, who added that OU's class is smaller than usual because the Sooners only had 11 seniors on scholarship last season. "I felt like it was an excellent day for us."
