KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 55 Oklahoma women's tennis team turned in a dominant performance with a 7-0 sweep over UMKC in Kansas City on Sunday.
The Sooners (5-4) won the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. For the second match in a row, the doubles point came down to senior Emma Devine and junior Mimi Fotopoulos at the No. 2 position. The Sooner duo battled back to defeat UMKC's Raquel Argenal and Mariam Kurasbediani, 6-4.
“We got off to a slow start in doubles today, but finished extremely strong in singles play," OU head coach David Mullins said. "It was nice to get a routine win, but now we turn our attention to some tough match ups in the next 10 days against our two in-state rivals.”
Oklahoma dominated in singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Miyazaki grabbed the first singles victory. The sophomore made quick work on court one, beating UMKC's Stavrianakou, 6-1, 6-0. Devine gave the Sooners a 3-0 lead with a straight-set victory over the Roos' Johnson, 6-1, 6-1. With Sunday's win, Devine remains undefeated on her senior season.
The clinching point came on court four as sophomore Simran Sethi took down the Roos' Marina Albert, 6-2, 6-0.
With the match in hand, play continued on courts three, five and six. At the No. 6 line, sophomore Malene Stripp topped Ammar Mouhoub, 6-1, 6-0. In her first match at the No. 3 spot, OU's Brigante beat Mariam Kurasbediani on court three, 6-2, 6-3.
