PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – For the second time in as many days, No. 12/11 Oklahoma (9-4) bounced back from a loss to earn a victory at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. After falling to No. 2 Michigan earlier in the day Friday, OU rebounded to hand No. 20/20 Fresno State (10-1) its first loss of the season with a 3-2 win.
The story of the game for Oklahoma was freshman pitcher Jayden Chestnut. After throwing just 7.1 innings on the season and sporting a 9.55 earned run average entering the game, the Mustang, Okla., native shut down the Bulldogs' offense to earn the first win of her career.
Senior pitcher Kelsey Stevens faced the first three batters, but after throwing over 130 pitches in the Sooners' loss to the Wolverines previously Friday, she walked each batter she faced and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.
Enter Chestnut. She promptly struck out the first three batters she faced to swing the momentum back in OU's favor. That was just a sign of things to come for the 2015 Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year. She got all 21 outs as she struck out a career-high six batters and gave up just one run on three hits and one walk.
Given new life by Chestnut's command, Oklahoma quickly tied the game up in the bottom of the first as freshman Sydney Romero connected for her first career home run.
The game then turned into a pitchers' duel for the next several innings, but Chestnut never faltered. After giving up a one out single in the third, she enjoyed back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth.
Oklahoma finally broke the deadlock in the fifth.
Freshman Caleigh Clifton led off the frame with a single through the left side on a full-count pitch. Two batters later, sophomore Kelsey Arnold singled up the middle to push Clifton to second. An infield fly threatened to end OU's scoring chance, but sophomore Lea Wodach had the big hit for the Sooners when she went the opposite way with a full-count pitch and singled to right field.
Clifton scored the go-ahead run and Arnold took third on the play. During the next at-bat, Wodach used a delayed steal to force a throw down to second base. She retreated to first base and got herself in a rundown. Before she was tagged out, Arnold was able to race home from third with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Chestnut continued her domination in the circle as she set down all three batters in the sixth and the first batter of the seventh. Fresno State's Dominique Jackson ended Chestnut's streak at 12 straight batters retired with a solo home run, cutting OU's lead to 3-2 with one out in the seventh.
After a groundout, Victoria Trevino kept the game alive for the Bulldogs with a walk. With the tying run on base and the go-ahead run at the plate, Malia Rivers connected on a 1-2 pitch back up the middle. Fittingly, Chestnut snared the line drive to end the game and capture her first career win.
Oklahoma closes out the weekend with one more game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Saturday morning. The Sooners face No. 11/10 UCLA at 11:30 a.m. CT.
