NORMAN, Okla. – Away from home for its first road test of 2016, the Oklahoma baseball team heads to Sam Houston State for a three-game set over the weekend. The series gets underway Friday night at 6:30 pm from Don Sanders Stadium.
The Sooners have bounced back from a slow start on opening weekend to win three in a row and enter the second weekend at 3-2. Oklahoma took the final two games of its series with Northeastern before taking down Abilene Christian, 7-1, on Wednesday evening. Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse is hitting a team-best .529 (9-for-17) with a 1.432 OPS, while driving in a team-high six runs and swiping four bags in four attempts. Junior infielder Jack Flansburg, a JuCo transfer, has made an immediate impact at the top of the OU lineup with a .500 (8-for-16) average, 1.328 OPS and nine runs scored. In his first five games back, junior outfielder Cody Thomas is hitting .308 (4-for-13) with a .982 OPS following his first career home run on Wednesday. At the top of the rotation, junior RHP Jake Elliott gets the ball on Friday. He took a no-decision in the season opener last Friday in a six-inning, two-run effort against the Huskies. He has been a mainstay in the Sooner rotation since his freshman year with 27 career starts and a 3.24 earned run average. As a team, Oklahoma is hitting .300 with a .438 on-base percentage. The Sooner bullpen owns a 0.79 ERA and has thrown 10 consecutive scoreless innings.
Sam Houston State is 0-5 following a sweep at the hands of No. 6 UL-Lafayette and a pair of home, midweek losses to Texas-San Antonio and No. 23 Texas Tech. In 2015, the Bearkats finished 31-28 with a 17-12 mark in the Southland under now second-year head coach Matt Deggs. SHSU turns to RHP Sam Odom (0-0) in Friday's opener. He allowed just one run in eight innings of a no-decision last weekend against the Ragin' Cajuns. Designated hitter Matt Broadbent (.357, 5-for-14) is third on the team in hitting, but has driven in a team-leading five runs in four starts. Left fielder Zach Smith leads the way at .462 (6-for-13).

All-Time vs. SHSU
Beginning the series in 1987, OU leads the Bearkats, 8-3 after dropping two out of three at home in 2015. SHSU opened the all-time series with a 5-1 win in 1987. The Sooners then rattled off eight wins in a row, including a 17-6 win at home in 1999. Last season marked the first three-game series between the two schools.
Last Time They Met
No. 23 Oklahoma welcomed Sam Houston State to Norman on April 24, 2015 and opened the series with a 3-2 win. Kolbey Carpenter notched his sixth straight multi-hit game in a 3-for-4 effort, including the go-ahead home run in the seventh. Game two went to the Bearkats in extras as they tied it in the seventh before winning on a fly ball lost in the sun in right field during the top of the 11th inning. SHSU left Norman with the series win following an 8-5 win in the finale. Oklahoma rallied from eight down with three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Road Test
Gearing the schedule toward the RPI, Oklahoma plays 30 games away from L. Dale Mitchell Park, which includes the Bedlam Series hosted by Oklahoma State and a game at Dodger Stadium against Mississippi State. It is the most for the Sooners since 1999 when they played 32 games away from home. The last three times that Oklahoma went on the road 28 times or more in a season, the Sooners hosted a regional in Norman in 2006, 2009 and 2010.
Reaching the Charts
Oklahoma became ranked for the first time in 2015 as it reached No. 23 in the Collegiate Baseball News Top-30 on April 13. The Sooners had previously been ranked on April 7, 2014 when they were No. 26 by CBN and No. 28 by NCBWA. The No. 21 ranking to open 2016 marked the highest for OU under head coach Pete Hughes. Oklahoma has spent 10 weeks on the charts in Hughes' tenure and own a 19-19 record when ranked.
