NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team received a waiver from the NCAA on Friday, which allows the team to carry a full, 35-player roster, which includes the addition of junior outfielder Cody Thomas (Colleyville, Texas). The Sooners entered spring practice with only 34 roster spots due to a student-athlete that attending the first day of class in the fall semester before leaving the university.
“The NCAA made the right decision on it,” stated head coach Pete Hughes. “Our compliance office did a great job fighting for us. The decision was truly made with the student-athlete's welfare at hand. It's a great opportunity for Cody and we're happy for our guys. We became a better team with that ruling.”
Thomas played for OU as a freshman and appeared in 14 games with 12 at-bats. A week into preseason a year ago, he decided to take the year off from baseball to focus on competing for the starting quarterback position with the OU football team. Thomas played in three games off the bench, including the Orange Bowl in 2015, but ultimately decided to return to baseball at the start of the spring semester, where he was not guaranteed a spot.
The Sooners open the season a week from today against Northeastern at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Friday, February 19 at 4:00 pm.
