NORMAN — For the second time in three seasons, the Oklahoma soccer team is headed back to the NCAA Championship.
The Sooners are set to host SMU in a first-round contest in Norman at John Crain Field. The match is slated to begin at 8 p.m. CT on Friday.
Tickets will go on sale online at 9 a.m. CT on Tuesday and can also be purchased at the field prior to the start of the match. For online orders, tickets will be print-at-home, or fans may visit the OU Athletics Ticket Office to receive hard copies of their tickets.
Cost is $10 for the general public, and group rates are also available for groups of 10 or more. For more information on group tickets and rate, please contact the ticket office at (405) 325-2424.
The first 100 students in attendance will receive a free ticket with a valid OU ID, and students arriving after the free tickets have been claimed may enter for $5 each.
“It speaks to the type of stages we want to be on," fifth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said of hosting the first-round game. "To host is exciting because it gives a chance for the local community to come out. We play a very, very good SMU team. A lot of respect for Chris (Petrucelli) and the work he's done there and since he's been there, the program itself. They've had a wonderful season, too, so it'll be a wonderful opportunity to come out and watch a great game of soccer.”
The bid marks OU's fourth NCAA appearance all-time (2003, 2010, 2014, 2016) and second under Potter's leadership. On Friday, the Sooners will be vying for the program's first-ever victory in NCAA competition.
The Sooners and the Mustangs enter the NCAA postseason with identical 13-6-2 overall records. OU's 13 victories tie the single-season school record. OU finished in a tie for third place in the Big 12 regular season, matching its highest-ever showing, and advanced to the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals.
The Mustangs are coming off a runner-up performance in the American Athletic Conference tournament. This will be SMU's 13th NCAA appearance in program history and the first since 2006. In the all-time series between OU and SMU, the Mustangs lead by a mark of 5-2-1.
OU is one of six Big 12 schools to qualify for the NCAA postseason, joining West Virginia, Texas Tech, TCU, Oklahoma State and Kansas.
