NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team plays its home finale Saturday afternoon against Baylor. The match will begin at 4 p.m. from McCasland Field House.
Oklahoma will honor six seniors following the conclusion of the match as part of its “Senior Day” festivities. Mandy Dolph, Lauren English, Kimmy Gardiner, Abbie Higgins, Micaela Spann and Madison Ward will all be playing their final home match as a Sooner.
The Sooners come into the matchup 14-13 overall and 5-9 in Big 12 play. Senior middle blocker Micaela Spann is first on the team and second in the league swinging .368 for 2.52 kills per set. Marion Hazelwood is second on the team at .314 and 2.63 kills per set and a team-leading 1.17 blocks per set average. Sophomore setter Audrey Alford dishes out an average of 11.34 assists per set, good for second among Big 12 setters. As a team, Oklahoma ranks first in the Big 12 in kills per set with 14.09 and second in hitting percentage at .253 and second in assists with 13.19 per set.
Baylor is tied for third in the Big 12 at 20-9 overall and 8-5 in league play. Redshirt -junior outside hitter Katie Staiger leads the Baylor offense on a .271 attack rate, while averaging 5.61 kills for the Big 12-high. Senior Morgan Reed controls the Bears' offense with an average of 10.27 assists per set and 1,048 on the season. As a team, the Bears are second in the Big 12 in opponent hitting percentage, holding their competition to an attack rate of .170.
The Sooners jumped out in front early to win the first set, but dropped the next three to lose the match 3-1, the team's first loss in Waco since 2008. The Bears swung .289 on 65 kills while holding OU to .174 on 52 kills for the match. Alyssa Enneking led the Oklahoma offense with 13 kills and added nine digs. Audrey Alford dished out 47 assists, while outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner led the team in digs with 17. For the Bears, Katie Staiger led all players in kills with 19 on the night and was one of four Baylor players in double-digits in kills.
The Sooners own the all-time series against the Bears, 39-16. Oklahoma has won 13 of the last 15 matches dating back to 2008, winning eight straight against the Bears from 2012 until October 22, when Baylor bested the Sooners in Waco. The Bears won the first two matches of the series in 1976 and 1977, but the Sooners then rattled off the series' longest winning streak of eight matches from 1979-89.
Kimmy Gardiner is a .341 hitter in five career matches against the Bears. In her first contest with Baylor, she hit .615 with 17 kills to just one error in a 2014 home win. Micaela Spann has hit .333 in seven matches against the Bears. She most recently tallied 11 kills, while hitting .375 in Waco last month.
Kimmy Gardiner notched her 10th double-double of the season at Kansas State (11/16). It marks the second year in a row she has posted 10 in one season. Gardiner is currently sixth in the Big 12. Audrey Alford and Alyssa Enneking have six and Madison Ward has posted there double-doubles this season. The Sooners are tied with TCU for having the most players to post multiple double-doubles this season.
The Sooners hosted No. 4 Texas in front of a crowd of 1,874 at McCasland Field House on September 28. It marked the seventh largest home crowd in program history. Each of the Sooners' last four home matches against the Longhorns ranks in the top-10 for home attendance. Oklahoma hosted its second four-digit home crowd of the season against No. 4 Kansas (11/5) with 1,052 fans in attendance. For the season, OU has totaled 9,365 in attendance; 635 away from a seventh straight season with 10,000 fans or more at McCasland.
