MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team lost in four sets at Kansas State, 3-1, at Ahearn Field House on Wednesday night. The Sooners dropped to 14-13 overall and 5-9 in the Big 12, while the Wildcats lifted their record to 19-8 and 8-6.
The loss was the second four-set loss Oklahoma suffered to K-State this season and the fifth four-set loss OU has accrued in conference play, including four of which the Sooners won the first set. Oklahoma narrowly claimed the first, 25-23, hitting a collective .419. The Wildcats then rattled off set victories of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-21.
Kylee Zumach came off the bench for Kansas State and led all players with 17 kills. She hit .342 and added three blocks. Senior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) led the Sooners with 16 kills on a .394 hitting percentage. For the match, K-State hit .333 to OU's .264.
Senior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) and junior middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) were also in double figures for Oklahoma with 11 kills each. Gardiner hit .360 with 11 digs for her team-leading 10th double-double of the season. Hazelwood hit .292 and contributed a team-high five blocks.
Three Wildcats joined Zumach in double figures, including Katie Reininger, who posted 11 with five blocks as she hit .588. Brooke Sassin and Bryna Vogel added 10 kills apiece. Sassin posted a double-double in an 11-dig effort, while Vogel was one shy with nine digs.
Katie Brand dished out 51 assists for the Wildcats to go with five kills, five digs and four blocks. Kersten Kober collected a match-high 15 digs. For the Sooners, sophomore outside hitter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) turned in 45 assists and seven digs. Redshirt-sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) picked up 10 digs.
Oklahoma returns to Norman for its home finale against Baylor on Saturday, November 19. The match will begin at 4 p.m. after originally being scheduled for 7 p.m.
