NORMAN — The No. 4 seed Oklahoma soccer team opens Big 12 Championship play against No. 5 seed Iowa State at 2 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The match will be played at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., and will stream live for free via the Big 12 Digital Network.
CONFERENCE REMATCH
No. 4 seed OU will open the 2016 Big 12 Soccer Championship on Wednesday afternoon, facing No. 5 seed Iowa State. In the meeting between the two squads on Sept. 30 in Ames, Iowa, the Sooners snagged a 3-0 victory. Seniors Shiloh Price, Rachel Ressler and Madison Saliba all tallied goals.
TOURNEY TIME
The Sooners are back in action at this week's Big 12 Championship with a shot at the program's first-ever conference title. OU finished tied for third with Baylor in the conference standings, matching their best-ever Big 12 showing (2010). Baylor was awarded the higher seed with a head-to-head victory. This marks OU's 11th conference tournament appearance all-time and its fourth under fifth-year head coach Matt Potter. Wednesday will be the first time that the Sooners will meet the Cyclones in postseason competition.
CHASING HISTORY
With 12 wins this season, the Sooners have the opportunity to match the school record for victories (13 in 2005) if they defeat Iowa State on Wednesday afternoon. The 12 victories already represent the most for a Sooner squad under Potter.
SHUTOUT STADE
So far this season, redshirt senior Kassidie Stade and the OU defense have tallied seven shutouts, including three in Big 12 play. This ties Stade for the OU single-season record of seven (Stade, 2015; Jennifer Nichols, 2005 and 2006) and brings her career total to 18, matching Catherine Wade (2001-04) for the most in program history.
ROAD TRIP
Away from Norman this season, the Sooners have won eight matches, posting a 7-3-0 overall record in road games and a 1-0-0 mark in neutral site contests. From Sept. 4 - Sept. 18, OU tallied five straight victories, marking the first time the Sooners have ever won five consecutive matches away from John Crain Field. Additionally, the seven true road wins are the most in a single year for the Sooners (won five in 2004, 2010), and the eight total away wins are a program record (had seven in 2010).
ALL-BIG 12 HONOREES
A program-record six Sooners received All-Big 12 accolades, led by senior defender Rachel Ressler, a first-team selection. Senior midfielder Jemma Cota, senior forward Liz Keester, junior midfielder Tori Bowman and sophomore defender Paige Welch earned second-team recognition. Freshman midfielder/defender Kristina O'Donnell earned freshman-team honors.
RPI UPDATE
The Sooners check in at No. 9 this week's NCAA Women's RPI and have been ranked in the top nine in each of the six listings. West Virginia leads the Big 12 at No. 2, and the seven other conference squads also find themselves within the top 75 in Kansas (No. 20), Iowa State (No. 39), Texas Tech (No. 42), Oklahoma State (No. 43), TCU (No. 50), Baylor (No. 62) and Texas (No. 74).
SENIOR CONTRIBUTIONS
OU's seniors have without a doubt been impactful for the Sooners this season, with Kassidie Stade playing every minute in goal and Jemma Cota, Liz Keester, Shiloh Price, Rachel Ressler and Madison Saliba contributing offensively, combining for 19 goals (59.4 percent of OU's total), 15 assists (68.2 percent) and 53 points (61.6 percent).
20 YEARS OF OKLAHOMA SOCCER
This season, the Sooners are celebrating 20 years of the OU soccer program, which was founded in 1996.
IOWA STATE
• Iowa State enters the match with a 10-7-1 overall record and a 3-4-1 mark in Big 12 play, good for the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. Most recently, the Cyclones fell in a narrow 1-0 decision at Kansas, not surrendering a score until the 86th minute.
• The Cyclones have recorded double-digit victories for the first time since 2012 and will be making their first Big 12 Championship appearance since 2013.
• The Cyclones have scored 17 goals this season, led by sophomore forward Klasey Medelberg with four. Freshman midfielder Hannah Cade (three), Koree Willer (two) and freshman forward Tegan Alexander (two) have also recorded multiple scores. Sophomore midfielder Emily Steil paces ISU with five assists, while Medelberg and Willer have two apiece.
• Junior Lindsey Hendon has played the majority of minutes in goal for the Cyclones, allowing 15 goals (0.82 GAA) and corralling 84 saves. All 10 of her wins have come via shutouts.
An OU win on Wednesday would advance it to face the winner of No. 1 seed West Virginia and No. 8 seed Texas Tech at 4:30 p.m. CT on Friday.
