NORMAN — University of Oklahoma kicker/punter Austin Seibert has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in a 52-46 win at No. 21 TCU, the conference announced Monday.
In the first full week of conference play, OU's sophomore do-it-all kicker punted five times for an average of 44.0 yards (a long of 50) with two downed inside the 20-yard line. Only one of his punts was returned and it went for just two yards.
The Belleville, Ill., native went 7-for-7 on extra points and nailed his lone field goal attempt on the day, a 35-yarder that put the Sooners up 52-46 with 1:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. The field goal served as the contest's final points, as OU's defense held TCU on the ensuing possession to win the game.
Seibert also handled kickoff duties, recording five touchbacks on his nine kicks.
This marks Seibert's second career Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honor. He also earned the award in 2015 after the Sooners' win over West Virginia in the fourth game of the season. In that contest, he connected on all three of his field goal attempts and punted five times for an average of 43.4 yards (including a career-long 58-yarder).
Seibert, who was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors as a punter last year, has punted 16 times this season for an average of 42.5 yards with nine boots resulting in fair catches. He has also kicked off 28 times, notching touchbacks on more than 50 percent of those kicks, and is 4-for-6 on field goals and a perfect 20-for-20 on extra points.
The No. 20/22 Sooners (2-2, 1-0) are back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. CT when they take on Texas (2-2, 0-1) in the 111th version of the Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
