NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team returns home after playing 10 of its last 12 matches on the road for a Saturday afternoon match-up with TCU. The Sooners host the Horned Frogs for a 12 p.m. contest. Admission is free.
Following a three-match win streak, Oklahoma has fallen into a three-match slide to enter the weekend at 12-7 overall and 3-6 in the Big 12 conference. Micaela Spann is hitting a team-best .401 with a 2.47 kills per set average. Madison Ward, who has missed time due to a recent injury, still leads the team in kills per set at 3.03. However, Alyssa Enneking has been the driving force on the outside for OU as she has lifted her season average to 2.96 kills and 2.19 digs per set; ranking second and third on the team. Defensively, Marion Hazelwood is averaging a team-high 1.18 blocks.
TCU is 10-9 overall, 3-6 in the Big 12 and has lost five in a row since narrowly defeating Oklahoma in five sets back on October 1 in Fort Worth. Regan McGuire, who hits .316, and Jillian Bergeson pace the offense with 2.18 and 2.01 kills per set, respectively. McGuire is second on a team that averages 2.40 blocks per set with 1.01, while Natalie Gower leads the defense at 1.28. Gower also hits at a team-leading .363 clip with 1.85 kills per set. Bergeson tallied 17 kills and Gower 15 blocks in TCU's previous meeting with OU.
Oklahoma fell to TCU in a five-set thriller in Fort Worth at the duo's first meeting of the year on October 1. It marked the fourth consecutive season the Sooners and Horned Frogs went to five sets in Fort Worth. Junior Kimmy Gardiner paced the Sooners with 20 kills, and sophomore setter Audrey Alford earned 43 assists with 15 digs. TCU exploded for 23.5 blocks in their victory, led by senior Natalie Gower, who compiled 15 total blocks.
Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 10-4. The Sooners have won the last five meetings in Norman against the Horned Frogs and from 2005-2014 OU won nine straight matchups. Oklahoma leads the series, 6-3, since TCU joined the Big 12 in 2012. The last time these teams met in Norman (2015), the Sooners defeated the Frogs, 3-0, with Audrey Alford notching 39 assists and Kimmy Gardiner earning a double-double (11 kills, 12 digs).
Madison Ward has lined up across the net from TCU seven times in her career and owns a 3.10 kills and 2.66 digs per set average in such matches. She has registered kill totals in double digits six times, including 14 earlier this month to go with 14 digs for her fourth career double-double against the Horned Frogs. Meanwhile, Kimmy Gardiner averages 2.38 kills and 2.24 digs per set against TCU. She fell one kill shy of her career total with 20 and added 11 digs before breaking her right pinky in the fifth set.
The Sooners are off in the midweek and return to action on Saturday, November 5. Oklahoma welcomes Kansas for a primetime match-up at 8 p.m. on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
