NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomore right fielder Blake Brewster (Moore, Okla.) delivered a game-winning, RBI-single up the middle to provide the white team, representing Choose Hope, a 6-5 walk-off win that evened the University of Oklahoma baseball's fall world series.
Choose Hope and Veteran's Corner, donned in the camouflage uniforms, traded leads throughout the afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park. CH got on the board in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice-fly. The lead flipped in the top of the fourth as VC plated three runs on three hits. Junior second baseman Kyle Mendenhall (Carlsbad, Calif.) knocked in two on a single to left and senior shortstop Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) knocked in one on a base hit up the middle. Mendenhall finished the day 4-for-5.
The lead flipped a half inning later as junior left fielder Quin Walbergh (Edmond, Okla.) blasted a three-run home run out to left to give Choose Hope the lead. Senior designated hitter Renae Martinez (San Pedro, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to right and junior first baseman Lorin Archibald (Renton, Wash.) walked to get aboard for Walbergh.
Veteran's Corner went back in front in the fifth. A walk to senior first baseman Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) and a single up the middle by freshman designated hitter Brady Lindsly (Keller, Texas) set the table. Sophomore third baseman Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.) then ripped a ground-rule double down the left field line to take the field.
In the bottom of the fifth, CH pulled even with a run on a sacrifice-fly from sophomore infielder Thomas Hughes (Norman, Okla.). Senior center fielder Ben Hollas (Longview, Texas) doubled to right-center to lead off the inning. Martinez singled and Archibald walked to load the bases with nobody out.
VC had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the ninth as O'Brien hit a ground-rule double into the right field bullpen with one down, but senior right-hander JB Olson (Shady Shores, Texas) finished the inning unscathed.
The bottom half of the eighth started with Archibald's third walk of the game. Walbergh then doubled down the left field line to put the potential winning run at third. A walk loaded the bases, which led to Brewster's walk-off single up the middle.
Olson (1-1) got the win in two innings of work with a strikeout and a walk. The loss went to sophomore right-hander Kyle Tyler (Oklahoma City) in four innings of relief. He allowed two runs on four hits and three walks. Between giving up a run in the fifth and the eighth, Tyler (0-1) worked a pair of perfect innings.
Sophomore right-hander Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.) made the start for Choose Hope and went three-scoreless innings. He gave up a single to the first batter he faced and that was it. Madden issued two runs and struck out two. Graduate right-hander Vincenzo Aiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched two-shutout innings of relief with four strikeouts. For Veteran's Corner, sophomore right-hander Austin Hansen (Lenexa, Kan.) pitched 2.2 innings. He surrendered one run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
The series concludes Friday, October 28 at 3:30 pm. On Thursday, October 27, the Sooners host their fourth annual ALS Awareness Halloween Game at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Finally, the week wraps up with the team's alumni game on Sunday, October 30 at 11 a.m. Admission is free to all events.
