NORMAN After scoring her first career goal on Sunday, Oklahoma soccer redshirt freshman forward/midfielder Kyle Escobedo has captured Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday.

OU used the late goal from Escobedo in the 89th minute to secure a 1-0 road non-conference victory at Cal St. Northridge on Sunday afternoon. Off a through ball up the middle from senior forward Liz Keester, the Phoenix, Ariz., native was able to beat CSUN goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill off her line and send the shot to the left post.

Escobedo's score represented the first goal surrendered by the Matadors over the last 450:03 of play, dating back to Oct. 2. It was also just the second allowed by CSUN at home this season, ending a string of shutout soccer that reached over 809 minutes.

Escobedo is the third Sooner to be recognized by the conference in 2016, joining Keester and Madison Saliba, who earned Offensive Player of the Week accolades on Sept. 20 and Oct. 18, respectively.

The Sooners will close the regular season at 7 p.m. CT this Friday when they head to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech. OU has secured its spot in the Big 12 Championship, slated for Nov. 2-6 in Kansas City, Mo., but seeding will be determined following this weekend's matches.
