IRVING, Texas – University of Oklahoma junior Marion Hazelwood has been named the Big 12 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office. The award marks the third of the season for a Sooner and the second of Hazelwood's career.
A 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Beach City, Texas, Hazelwood tied for the league lead in blocks this past week by averaging 2.00 per set. She totaled a season-high nine, including four solos, in a sweep of West Virginia on Friday night. She followed with five assists in a four-set win over the Mountaineers.
Offensively, Hazelwood added 16 kills, averaging 2.29 per set, including 12 on Saturday.
A unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection a year ago, Hazelwood was last honored with a weekly award in 2014. She was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week on November 24. Oklahoma's last defensive award winner was Maria Fernanda in 2012.
The Sooners are on the road in the midweek with a 6 p.m. contest at Texas Tech on Wednesday, October 12. They then return home for a 6 p.m. match-up with Kansas State. Attendance is free following the OU football team's game against the Wildcats.
