COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 7 University of Oklahoma wrestling team fell to 9-3 on the season after dropping a 31-12 dual with No. 5 Missouri on Saturday afternoon inside the Hearnes Center.
Three Sooners registered wins in the contest, including Ross Larson's victory by fall in the heavyweight match.
No. 11 Ryan Millhof started the Sooners off with a 3-2 decision over No. 10 Barlow McGhee at 125 pounds. The match remained scoreless through two periods before Millhof escaped to begin the third. McGhee tallied a takedown and Millhof escaped again to make the score 2-2, but Millhof secured the riding-time point for the win.
In the 133-pound contest, No. 4 Cody Brewer downed No. 13 Zach Synon in a 10-3 decision. Brewer registered a takedown with eight seconds left in the match in hopes of a bonus-point victory, but Synon escaped with one second remaining to make the score 10-3.
“I feel like Ryan Millhof is getting better with every competition, and Cody Brewer is a warrior in every sense of the word,” OU head coach Mark Cody said. “If we can get everyone to fight as hard as Cody Brewer does then we're going to be in a good place by the time that conference and NCAAs come around.”
Ross Larson scored the Sooners' final points of the contest with a first-period fall over James Romero at heavyweight. Larson led 4-0 in the match before registering the pin in 1:35.
“Ross is executing very well right now,” Cody explained. “I feel like he's starting to believe in himself as much as all of the coaches do.”
At 141 pounds, No. 8 Matt Manley recorded a win by fall in 2:40 over Trae Blackwell. In an exciting 149-pound contest, No. 3 Lavion Mayes registered a last-second takedown to defeat Davion Jeffries, 4-2. Le'Roy Barnes secured the major decision over Brock Wingbermuehle, 8-0, in the 157-pound contest.
At 165 pounds, Clark Glass dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 5 Daniel Lewis and No. 10 Blaise Butler registered a win by fall over Matt Reed in 2:16 at 174 pounds. In the 184-pound bout, Cody Johnston secured a technical fall over Andrew Dixon, 16-0, in 3:45. No. 2 J'Den Cox downed Brad Johnson in an 8-0 decision at 197 pounds.
The Sooners return to the mat on Friday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. for their second Bedlam contest of the year. The dual will be held inside Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
