FORT WORTH, Texas — Behind its season-best score, the No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team soared to a first-place finish at the competitive 2016 Metroplex Challenge inside Fort Worth Convention Center on Saturday night.
The Sooners posted a 197.550, defeating No. 6 LSU (196.750), Washington (196.175), No. 12 Stanford (196.075) and No. 16 Missouri (195.825). OU's score is the nation's best for an away meet this season.
OU (9-1 overall) set meet and season highs on both bars and floor with marks of 49.525 and 49.500, respectively. The Sooners' bars score matches the best in the nation so far this season and ties as the eighth-best total in program history.
The Sooners have topped the 197 mark in each of their last four meets, and their score from Saturday stands as the third best in the country this season.
Individually, juniors McKenzie Wofford and Charity Jones claimed or shared top event honors. Wofford grabbed a share of the bars crown with a season-high-matching 9.95. Jones secured the floor honor with a career-best 9.95 in her fifth career appearance on the event, all of which have come this season, shattering her previous best of 9.85.
In the all-around, junior Chayse Capps claimed second place with a career-best 39.575, while senior Keeley Kmieciak took sixth with a 39.350.
The Sooners started the evening on vault, scoring a 49.325 for the rotation, equaling their second-best mark of the season. As the leadoff, Jones soared to a career-high-matching 9.9. In the No. 2 spot, freshman Alex Marks also matched her career best with a 9.825. Kmieciak posted a 9.825 on vault, while Capps contributed a 9.875. Senior Haley Scaman also added a 9.875, and sophomore AJ Jackson anchored with a 9.85.
After a bye, OU headed to bars, where it put together a monster performance. With all six scores of a 9.85 or better, the Sooners rolled to a season-high 49.525 on the event.
"Coming out of the bye, I felt the team did a great job of recapturing their momentum and feeding off that energy for the rest of the meet," OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. "The bar rotation was electric. I'm so impressed with the way this lineup is performing week after week."
Leading the Sooners on bars was Wofford, whose huge 9.95 matched her season best. Wofford has scored at least a 9.9 in all five of OU's meets this season. Both freshman Nicole Lehrmann and Capps put together career-best-matching performance, recording marks of 9.9 and 9.925, respectively. In the No. 4 spot, Scaman continued the trend of big scores for OU, tallying a 9.9. Jackson started off the rotation with a 9.85, and Kmieciak also added a 9.85 in the No. 5 spot.
Capps paced the Sooners on beam, scoring a 9.9 as the anchor. Lehrmann tallied a 9.85 in the No. 2 spot, and Kmieciak and Jones added identical scores of 9.825. The Sooners recorded a 49.200 for the rotation.
The Sooners entered the final rotation with a 148.050-147.300 advantage over LSU and used a season-best 49.500 on floor to clinch the victory. Kmieciak opened the rotation with a season-best-matching 9.85, and sophomore Natalie Brown and followed with a season-high 9.875. In the No. 3 spot, Capps set a season-best with a 9.875. Jones exploded for her career-best 9.95 in the No. 4 slot, and Jackson and Scaman rounded out the rotation with scores of 9.9.
"Floor was the whole package tonight and a great exclamation point on the competition," Kindler said. "Charity was absolutely in the zone today. She was laser-focused."
LSU finished the meet with scores of 49.325 (UB), 48.600 (BB), 49.375 (FX) and 49.450 (VT), while Washington posted scores of 49.150 (UB), 49.250 (BB), 48.985 (FX) and 48.800 (VT). Stanford went 48.575 (FX), 48.900 (VT), 49.300 (UB) and 49.300 (BB), and Missouri tallied marks of 49.150 (UB), 48.575 (BB), 49.075 (FX) and 49.025 (VT).
The Sooners compete in two meets next weekend, first heading to Texas Woman's University on Friday, Feb. 5. OU will also face No. 9 Auburn and Illinois State in the quad-meet. OU then returns home to host Big 12 opponent West Virginia at 1:45 p.m. CT on Sunday, Feb. 7 inside Lloyd Noble Center.
