WACO, Texas – No. 18/19 Oklahoma women's basketball dropped its first Big 12 contest of the season, falling to No. 4/4 Baylor, 78-68, on Sunday at Ferrell Center.
Four Sooners scored in double figures led by Peyton Little's 19 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the field. The redshirt junior, who scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half, tied a season-high with four 3-pointers in 37 minutes. Little also tied a season-high with six assists and finished the night 4 of 9 from behind the arc.
Oklahoma (10-3, 1-1 Big 12) jumped out to an early 11-6 advantage with 5:41 left in the first quarter behind five points from Little, but the Lady Bears (14-1, 1-1 Big 12) closed the opening stanza with an 11-4 run over the final 4:50 to grab the lead. The Sooners committed 15 of their 18 turnovers in the first half, allowing Baylor to capitalize with 15 points off turnovers.
“We had too many turnovers, gave up too many second chances points and (Baylor's) Alexis Jones was fantastic,” Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale said. “I thought she really played well and made some tough shots. It seemed like each time in the second half every time we got on a roll and just about to make that next step, (Jones) would make a big three.”
Baylor used an 11-4 run to begin the second quarter to extend its lead to 32-21. Kristy Wallace scored 10 points in the opening frame, while Nina Davis poured in 14 of her 24 points in the first half to lead the Lady Bears.
Trailing by 12 points, its largest deficit of the season, OU cut the Baylor lead down to 53-50 with 1:13 to go in the third quarter after Little hit her first 3-pointer of the second half. The Sooners, who finished the second half with just three turnovers, knocked down seven triples over the game's final two quarters to chip away at the Baylor lead.
The Sooners had an opportunity to tie the game to close the third quarter, but the Lady Bears forced an OU turnover as Baylor's Niya Johnson converted a three-point play to push the lead back to six points.
Gabbi Ortiz added 11 points for the Sooners in the second half , scoring 14 on 4 of 11 shooting. The sophomore also recorded three rebounds and three assists. Junior guard T'ona Edwards provided a spark for OU off the bench with 11 points in 19 minutes of action.
Redshirt senior Kaylon Williams finished in doubles figures for the 13th time this season, recording 11 points and adding in nine rebounds. Williams also picked up two blocks, passing Leah Rush for 10th-place in the OU record books with 62 career blocks.
Baylor's Alexis Jones, who scored 19 in the second half, set a career-high 25 points on 10 of 17 from the floor, while Davis finished with 24 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Bears. Wallace recorded 13 points and Johnson added in 10 points, a game-high 11 assists and four steals.
