NORMAN?? Another meet meant more of the same for the No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team as it topped the 197-mark for the third consecutive competition. The Sooners finished first in a tri-meet with Big 12 opponent Iowa State and Arizona State on Friday night inside Lloyd Noble Center in their Beauty and the Beast event.
In the contest, OU (5-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12) stormed to a season-high 197.475, matching or setting its best marks on both beam and floor. OU's total is also the second-highest score by any team nationally this season.
The Cyclones (4-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12) came in second with a 193.850, while the Sun Devils (1-4 overall) scored a 193.325 to finish third.
On every event, at least one Sooner secured individual titles for the third straight meet. Junior Chayse Capps and senior Keeley Kmieciak grabbed the all-around crown with identical scores of 39.500. The mark was a season high for both Sooners, who have competed in the all-around in all four of OU's competitions.
Capps shared the vault title with teammates Haley Scaman and AJ Jackson with scores of 9.875, while Kmieciak and junior McKenzie Wofford clinched the bars honor with 9.925s. On beam, sophomore Natalie Brown soared to the beam crown with a career-high 9.925, and Scaman took top honors on floor with a season-best-matching 9.925.
The Sooners started off the night strong on vault, recording a 49.300 to take a .750 advantage over Arizona State and a 1.125 lead over Iowa State into the second rotation. All six Sooners posted scores of at least 9.8, paced by a trio of 9.875s from Capps, Scaman and Jackson.
Junior Charity Jones started off vault with a 9.8, and Kmieciak contributed a 9.85. In her third appearance in the vault lineup, freshman Alex Marks stepped up to contribute a career-best 9.825 for the Sooners in the No. 2 spot.
Tenth-year OU head coach K.J. Kindler said she thought the vault outing was the best for her team so far this season.
“The first four stuck their vaults cold. I think I could see this score being about a 49.45 or higher. It was that good today,” Kindler said. “I'm really impressed with the beginning of the vault lineup. We've been doing really big, dynamic vaults, but we haven't been sticking the landings, so we were able to reel some of those in today, so that was a really big step forward.
On bars, the Sooners picked up where they left off, rolling to a 49.425, their second-best mark on the event this season. Jackson and freshman Nicole Lehrmann tallied strong marks of 9.85, and Capps added a 9.875. Closing out the event were Kmieciak and Wofford, who both stuck their landings and recorded matching scores of 9.925. The mark was a season best for Kmieciak, while Wofford has tallied at least a 9.9 in all four appearances this year. ?
OU used five routines of at least 9.825, including two career-best marks, to soar to a season-best-matching 49.400 on beam. In the No. 4 spot, Brown put together a beautiful routine and earned a career-high 9.925. Jones also tallied a personal best score, posting a 9.875 in just her fourth appearance on the event. Kmieciak was yet again strong in the leadoff spot, scoring a 9.875 to start the Sooners on beam. Junior Kara Lovan added a 9.825 in the No. 5 slot, and Capps anchored with a 9.9.
The Sooners shined in their floor rotation as all six scored at least a 9.825 en route to their season-best score of 49.350. Anchoring the event, Scaman paced OU with a 9.925, matching her high score of the season, and Jackson added a 9.9. Also turning in season-best performances were Kmieciak and Capps, who both scored 9.85s. Brown and Jones added scores of 9.825 for OU on the event.
“Tumbling was good, but in particular, I felt like they really put a lot of energy into their choreography, and that's what really brings a crowd in,” Kindler said of the Sooners' performance on floor. “The student section was going crazy. That was really fun to see, and that's why they do it?because it's really exciting and they can show their personalities and be crazy, and I thought they were tonight. [Haley] Scaman I thought was beyond her normal, subtle dancing self. I thought she was really dynamic today on floor.”
Iowa State opened the meet on bars, recording a 48.175, and added scores of 48.100 (beam), 49.050 (floor) and 48.525 (vault). Arizona State tallied marks of 48.550 (beam), 48.900 (floor), 48.300 (vault) and 47.575 (bars).
The Beauty and the Beast event was held in conjunction with the OU wrestling program and featured a split-floor gymnastics meet and wrestling dual. The OU wrestling squad was also victorious on the evening, defeating Iowa State 28-9.
“I think that it could ultimately benefit both programs being that we had a huge fan base for just the Sooners in general,” Capps said of the event. “The energy was ecstatic tonight. It's really cool [to have] so many people in a bowl setting cheering for us.”
Next weekend, OU will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 30. Opponents at the meet will be No. 7 LSU, No. 14 Missouri, No. 24 Stanford and Washington. The event will be held in the Fort Worth Convention Center, the host site of the 2016 NCAA Championships.
The Sooners will return to the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday, Feb. 7, when they host Big 12 opponent West Virginia.
