NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma volleyball is fresh off a weekend-bye as it gets set to host Iowa State at McCasland Field House on Wednesday night. The match is set to start at 6:00 pm on ESPNU and will serve as the team's annual “Pledge for a Cure” match.
A stream of the match will also be available via the WatchESPN app or at WatchESPN.com. Sportstalk 1400 AM in Norman will broadcast the game locally on the radio dial.
Oklahoma is 6-7 after falling in its Big 12 opener at Texas Tech last week in five sets. Four of the Sooners' losses have come in five and the other three have come in four. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward leads the OU attack with 3.10 kills per set to go with 2.02 digs. Senior setter Julia Doyle runs the offense to the tune of 7.41 assists per set, while contributing 1.81 digs per set on the defensive side of the ball. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner has totaled a team-high five double-doubles with a 2.65 kills and 2.35 digs per set average.
Iowa State is 8-4 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 with a sweep over Texas Tech at home on Saturday. Jess Schaben leads the way offensively with a 3.36 kills per set average on a .284 hitting percentage. Ciara Capezio adds 3.00 kills and 2.68 digs per set. On the back row, Caitlin Nolan leads the Big 12 with 5.60 digs per set.
Fans in attendance are encouraged to donte to "Pledge for a Cure" to fight childhood cancer and benefit the Jimmy Everest Center and the OU Children's Hospital. Despite falling in five, it was a record-setting night for the Sooners in their “Pledge for a Cure” match against the Cyclones (11/12/14). Kierra Holst set a program record with 32 kills and Doyle added a career-high 60 assists to mark the program-high during the 25-point, rally-scoring era. ISU comeback was led by 16 kills from Morgan Kuhrt and 34 digs by Nolan.
Despite falling in each of the last three match-ups, Oklahoma leads the all-time series against Iowa State, 44-31, and are 22-11 in Norman. The series started in 1976 with a 2-0 Sooner win that started the longest winning streak in series history; six matches.
This season marks Oklahoma's seventh annual “Pledge for a Cure” match. All proceeds raised will benefit the OU Children's Hospital in an effort to fight childhood cancer. The match is played in honor of head coach Santiago Restrepo's youngest son Javi, who passed in 2009 from ALL.
Oklahoma went 11-2 at McCasland Field House in 2014, including a four-match sweep of the NIKE Invitational. During a span of seven NCAA Tournaments since 2007, the Sooners are 100-44 at their home floor. For the second straight season, Oklahoma set a new program record for average home attendance at 942. The Sooners previous best was 928 in 2013. Oklahoma was the last remaining unbeaten team at home in the Big 12 last season at 9-0.
