NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team defeated the Ontario Blue Jays, 16-3, at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays led 1-0 through five innings before the Sooners began scoring in bunches with a five-run sixth and seven-run seventh.
Freshman right-hander Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.) started on the hill for Oklahoma and pitched two innings with one hit and three strikeouts. He allowed a leadoff-single on the first pitch of the game, but quickly erased the baserunner on a pick-off before getting the next two looking. Trailing 1-0, freshman right-hander Austin Hansen (Lenexa, Kan,) took the mound for two-scoreless frames. He needed just 17 pitches to retire all six batters faced, while striking out three. Freshman right-hander Kyle Tyler (Oklahoma City, Okla.) earned the win with two-shutout innings. He struck out three and surrendered only one hit.
The Sooners took advantage of free passes to first base to get the offense going in the bottom of the sixth. The bases were loaded on three-consecutive base on balls before the tying-run scored on a wild pitch. Junior right fielder Reggie Wright (Choctaw, Okla.) put OU in front with a single to left-center and a triple to the wall in left-center from freshman left fielder Blake Brewster (Moore, Okla.) made it a 4-1 Sooner lead.
In the seventh, Oklahoma got the first three on by way of the walk yet again. Freshman first baseman Chris Andritsos (The Woodlands, Texas) broke the game open with a two-run double off the wall in left and freshman catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) put the game out of reach with a two-run, in-the-park home run to the 411'-mark in left-center.
The Sooners take the field for the Fall World Series beginning Monday, October 12. Games two and three of the intra-squad series will take place on October 13 and 14.
