NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma volleyball team opens Big 12 play at Texas Tech on Wednesday evening. The Sooners, who finished 2014 in a three-way tie for second at 10-6, and Red Raiders hit the floor at 6:00 pm.
Oklahoma enters its Big 12 portion of the schedule with a 6-6 record compiled in non-conference matches. After playing stiff competition, which included four ranked opponents, the Sooners are led offensively by redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward. She is averaging 3.03 kills and 1.97 digs per set, while recording three double-doubles. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner has a team-leading four double-doubles with a 2.63 kills and 2.33 digs per set average. At the net, junior middle blocker Micaela Spann has dominated with a 2.31 kills per set average on a team-high .414 attack rate to go with a 1.20 blocks per set average.
Texas Tech is 11-3 on the season, including a 5-1 record at home. Eight wins have come by way of the sweep, while TTU is yet to go five sets on the season. Lauren Douglass leads the Big 12 with a .467 hitting percentage, while posting a 3.40 kills per set average. Setter Marguerite Grubb manages the attack to the tune of 11.33 assists per set, while contributing 2.78 digs and 0.98 kills per set. Defensively, libero Carlie Foust leads the Red Raiders at 4.76 digs per set. As a team, Texas Tech hits .256 with 14.0 kills per set.
Last Time They Met
The Sooners, led by 19 kills from Kierra Holst, made quick work of the Red Raiders in straight sets. Oklahoma earned the win by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-15 in a match that lasted 1:23. The win was the 10th sweep of the season for the Sooners. Marion Hazelwood finished second for OU with 12 kills and hit a match-high .588. In two matches last season, Hazelwood hit .667 with 27 kills in seven sets against TTU. Oklahoma hit a collective .374 with eight blocks.
All-Time vs. Tech
Despite winning each of the last 19 meetings, the Sooners still trail the all-time series against the Red Raiders, 34-32. On the road, Oklahoma trails, 14-11. Under Santiago Restrepo, the Sooners own a 19-2 record with the two losses coming in 2004 and 2005.
1,000-Piece dignugget
Senior defensive specialist Taylor Migliazzo (@mignugget on social media) reached the 1,000-dig mark against Maryland on September 18. She finished the match with 13 as her ninth of the win was the milestone marker. Migliazzo became the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-dig mark at OU. The most recent to do so was Maria Fernanda (2009-12), the Sooners' all-time leader at 2,204. Migliazzo, who has 1,010, currently trails Sara Biese (1990-93) for 14th at OU with 1,019.
Streak Snappers
In the OU Invitational finale, the Sooners snapped No. 7 Washington's perfect, 28-0 record in sets played. The Huskies, who improved to 10-0 with the win, had not lost a set all season. Against No. 3 USC in the week's opener, Oklahoma handed the Trojans their first set loss since the season opener on August 28. Though the Sooners are 0-4 against ranked teams in 2014, they have earned five sets against such opponents and have yet to be swept this season.
