IRVING, Texas – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team enters the preseason ranked third in the Big 12 Coaches' Poll. The Sooners received 49 points, including one first place vote, while Texas is the unanimous No. 1 with 64 points and eight first place votes.
Oklahoma finished 2014 in a three-way tie for second place in the conference at 10-6 with Kansas and Iowa State. The Cyclones (53) claimed the second spot and Kansas (43) pulled in to fourth in the poll. For the Sooners, third is their highest preseason poll position since tying with Iowa State for second in 2011.
Kansas State (41) is in the middle of the pack with the fifth spot, while the poll is rounded out by Baylor (26), TCU (24), Texas Tech (16) and West Virginia (8).
The Sooners' Big 12 schedule gets underway at Texas Tech on September 23. The conference home opener will be played a week later against Iowa State on September 30. The season culminates with a showdown against Texas on the final day of the regular season on November 28.
On Thursday, the Big 12 announced that Sooner senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) earned a share of the Preseason Player of the Year and is a unanimous Preseason Team selection for the second year in a row; her third overall selection. Joining Holst on the Preseason Team are senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) and redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.).
