NORMAN, Okla. – Former University of Oklahoma baseball fireballer Jonathan Gray officially received his Major League Baseball call-up by the Colorado Rockies Monday ahead of his scheduled start against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Gray, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, toes the rubber for the Rockies (44-60) against left-hander Vidal Nuno at 7:40 pm CT from Coors Field in Denver.
A First Team All-American at Oklahoma in 2013, Gray matched former big leaguer Bobby Witt as the highest draft pick in Sooners history as the third overall selection. He becomes the 67th OU baseball alum to debut in the majors and the first since Jackson Williams a season ago. Gray is also the fourth to debut since the 2013 season and will be the third to play in a Major League game in 2015 along with fellow first rounder Garrett Richards and Chase Anderson.
In his second full professional season, Gray is 6-6 with a 4.33 earned run average with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes of the Pacific Coast League. He bounced back nicely from a slow start, including a rare relief appearance in the season's opening week, with a 6-3 record and 3.17 ERA since May 2. Most recently, Gray is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA over his last six starts.
Gray's professional career got off to a 4-0 start with a combined nine starts for the Grand Junction Rockies of the rookie-level Pioneer League and the Single-A Advanced Modesto Nuts of the California League in 2013. Last season, he went 10-5 with the nearby Tulsa Drillers; Colorado's former Double-A affiliate in the Texas League.
Over two seasons with the Sooners, Gray went 18-7, including a 10-win season in 2013, with a 2.32 ERA and 251 strikeouts, which ranks 11th all-time at OU, in 229 innings pitched.
Gray was present at Coors Field and participated in batting practice on Monday prior to the Rockies' series opener against the Mariners. Colorado still needs to make room for Gray on the 25-man roster by completing the transaction before Tuesday's game.
