COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Oklahoma soccer team fell just shy of upsetting No. 11 South Carolina on the road, dropping a narrow 2-1 decision in double overtime Sunday night inside Stone Stadium.
With the loss, OU moved to 0-2-0 on the season, while the Gamecocks improved to 2-0-0 overall in front of their home crowd of 5,460 people. It was the second consecutive match that the Sooners lost 2-1 in extra time, falling at Furman by the same result Friday night in the regular-season opener.
“Result aside, we have much good to reflect on. Once we fully gel as a group, we will be on the right side of these results,” said fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter. “South Carolina is a top program and the environment was a wonderful spectacle for women's collegiate soccer. Our performance gave us a chance to win, but small details cost us. We now go back to work, compete, improve and get ready for Bedlam.”
Neither team put together much of an offensive attack in the first half before South Carolina broke through with a goal from freshman forward Courtney Kaplan in the 37th minute to put the Gamecocks ahead 1-0.
The Sooners struggled to get their offense going forward early, recording just two shots in the first half. However, they responded in the second half, controlling possession and firing four shots, including two on goal.
Trailing 1-0 with under five minutes to play, OU stole the momentum late as junior forward Liz Keester snuck in a goal in the 86th minute with an assist from freshman Paige Welch to tie the contest at 1-1, forcing overtime. The goal was the first for Keester in the Crimson and Cream after transferring to OU from Texas A&M.
South Carolina sophomore midfielder Lindsey Lane scored the game winner in the second overtime, corralling a loose ball after a free kick. The goal, which came at the 105:24 mark, was assisted by sophomore midfielder Savannah McCaskill.
OU took eight shots on the night, led by two from freshman forward Emily Parker. Junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade tallied two saves in the contest. The Gamecocks recorded 11 shots, including four on goal.
The Sooners return to action on Friday, Aug. 28, as they head to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State in a non-conference Bedlam battle. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CT.
