NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma baseball head coach Pete Hughes has announced that the Sooners have elected to honor Jacob Evans (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Anthony Hermelyn (McKinney, Texas) as the team's captains from the 2015 season. A team vote was held over the weekend to determine the two players who, throughout the entire season, embodied the ultimate leader and teammate.
“I'm so happy that Jacob and Anthony's approach to our program, on an everyday basis, with their consistency and work ethic was recognized by their teammates,” stated Hughes. “The true standard of a captain is one that is elected by his teammates and judged on his body of work. There couldn't be two better guys to receive this honor from their peers.”
Both, Evans and Hermelyn, recently completed their junior season at OU and are anticipated to be drafted in the early-to-mid rounds of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which takes place June 8-10. A left-handed pitcher, Evans was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team as a relief pitcher. He posted a team-leading 1.67 earn run average, 6-1 record and eight save in 43 innings of work with 53 strikeouts. Hermelyn split his time on the field between first base and catcher. He earned the spot of All-Big 12 First Team utility man with a .321 batting average, six home runs and a team-leading 49 RBI.
The two have been linked since their rookie seasons in 2013 and each was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and later played together with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League where each was named to the All-Star Team in 2014.
