TULSA, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team advanced to Friday of the Big 12 Championship with a 6-1 win over West Virginia in front of 2,960 at ONEOK Field on Thursday afternoon. The three-seed Sooners improved to 33-26, while the seven-seed Mountaineers' season ended at 27-27.

"I thought it was a great team effort,” stated head coach Pete Hughes. “You don't like these days because it might mean the last time you get to coach a bunch of kids you love being around and it may be elimination day and you're bounced out of the tournament. There's a lot going on, but the only thing we can control is our energy level and our ability to execute. We got a dugout full of veteran guys that have won this tournament before, and that's who came through today. It was a good team win today and a lot of people contributed."

Redshirt-senior right-hander Robert Tasin (Klein, Texas) pitched seven innings of one-run ball to move to 9-2 on the season. He scattered seven hits and two walks; yielding only a run in the fifth that tied the game, 1-1. Tasin added five strikeouts on the mound and delivered a RBI-single in a four-run OU eighth when inserted into the DH role. With his glove, he caught two line drives back to the mound, including one in the seventh to double off a runner at second in a one-run game.

“We needed a quality start and [Tasin] gave us that,” commented Hughes. “He's done it all year long. Being a fifth-year senior, he's composed and believes in his teammates. Robert was key and then to come off the bench and hit a big RBI-single as well.”

The Sooners, who led immediately with a RBI-double by junior catcher Anthony Hermelyn (McKinney, Texas) in the first, went got the go-ahead run on a sacrifice-fly off the bat of sophomore shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) in the sixth. Senior third baseman Joshua Ake (Readington, N.J.) drew a lead-off walk and was replaced on first by junior first baseman Kolbey Carpenter (Waco, Texas), who reached on a fielder's choice. Hermelyn singled and Carpenter went first-to-third to put runners on the corners with one out for Neuse.

Ake started another rally in the eighth with a walk. Singles by Carpenter and Hermelyn loaded the bases with one out for Neuse. A fly ball over the center fielder cleared the bases and moved the Oklahoma lead to 5-1. Tasin then picked up a bat and plated Neuse with a base hit into shallow right-center.

Lefty Ross Vance (7-5) surrendered six runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out six. Catcher Ray Guerrini went 2-for-3 in the nine-hole for WVU.

Hermelyn finished the game 3-for-5, while redshirt-senior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh (Broken Arrow, Okla.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. For the game, the Sooners out-hit the Mountaineers, 11-9.

Oklahoma plays Friday night at 7:00 pm against the loser of Oklahoma State and Kansas State. The Sooners pitcher is TBA.
