Quarterback Trevor Knight
April 6, 2015

On what's required of a quarterback in this offense: “It's a mindset thing. Go out there and really think that you're going to score each and every play you touch the ball. That's the mindset he brings in, that's what he pushes in to each and every player. It's what we try to do: score every time we touch the ball.”

On if his previous response means they didn't try to score every time they had the ball previously:
“Oh no, you did, but it's, like I said, it's a different mentality that he brings to it, it's more up tempo, it's more, you know, instead of looking at the little finer things, it's, 'let's go make a play happen.'”

On how competing for a starting position affects his mentality compared to last year:
“It's the same mentality. You know, you gotta compete everywhere you go, and honestly it's a privilege to be able to compete, to be alongside Baker and Cody and Justice, it's an honor, you know, it's an honor to come and wear these colors, and to have to compete again. It's not a knock, it's an 'alright, let's go make this happen.' I've been here before, and you know, that's just the nature of the beast.”

On if he feels like he's playing catch-up to Baker, who has experience in a similar offensive system:
“No, not at all. I think we all got a clean slate here, and we've all taken to it really well, all the guys, and it's a little bit different than what he was doing at (Texas) Tech. No, not at all.”

On RB Joe Mixon:
“He's done a great job. I mean, just athletically, he's way above par, and like the rest of the guys, he's taken to the offense really well, and he's been multiple in a bunch of different ways for us, and he's gonna prove to be a really good asset for us come the fall.”

On TE Mark Andrews:
“Same thing with Mark. You know, he's the type of guy that you can flex him out or you can bring him in, and he's so multiple in that way, 'cause he's really athletic and really fast, so you get mismatches there on the inside, and he's done a great job.”

On if the transition has been as simple at the quarterback position as it has been as receivers said it was for them:
“It is. It's a simplified offense if you do it right.  You know, if you move fast and you make the correct read it is simplified, and it is simplified for those guys on the outside because we are moving so fast. You don't have to look into too many things that fake too much, you just get to go play.”

On if the new offense only has a few plays that decisions are made off of:
“Close to it, yeah. I mean, there's a lot of different things you can do, just like any offense, but there is the base plays, and you just go play and make plays, no doubt.”

On Lincoln Riley's personality:
“Great guy to be around. I keep saying it, but we enforce it over and over every day at practice, he brings the mentality. You know, he brings that mentality, you know, the confidence, he's pushing confidence. He's, 'alright, let's go score on this play, okay.' 'After we make this catch, we're gonna run this play.' I mean, it's a constant confidence deal with him.”

On if this year's competition for starting quarterback position will be pushed into August like it was two years ago with Knight and Blake Bell:
“You know, I don't know. That's completely up to them, I'm just gonna come and work every day and have fun with it. I've had, you know, one of the most fun springs of my career here, my football career even, so I'm just going to go out and keep having fun and they can make that decision whenever it's time.”

On if Mayfield's approach has changed since he's found out he will be playing this season:
“No, Baker's been the same guy since he got here. He works extremely hard, he's a heady player and an athletic guy, and he knows how to make plays. He's done a really good job.”

On how Knight and Mayfield get along well despite contrasting personalities:
“We're really close friends. He's always over at our house, Cody lives with me, and Justice is a great guy, too. It's a fun meeting room to be in, and, you know, I've said that before with our past meeting room with Blake in there. Me and Blake are close to best friends. Just been fortunate to around a bunch of great guys since I've been here.”

On if Mayfield is capable of toning down his excitement at the right times:
“Yeah, absolutely. He has a presence about him on the field, an energy about him on the field, and guys follow him, and that's a great quality to have as a quarterback. He's one of the guys, he's around all the guys and everybody likes him, but there's also times when he needs to tone it down, he can tone it down.”
