MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The 39th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team finished the 2015 regular season with a 4-0 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts Saturday, giving Oklahoma head coach David Mullins his 100th career victory.
“I would just like to thank the University of Oklahoma for allowing me to lead its women's tennis program,” said Mullins. “I am very appreciative and honored every day that I have been afforded this opportunity.”
The win also moved OU to 13-8 on the season and the Sooners are now 3-0 all-time against West Virginia.
Mullins experimented with a new lineup with senior Abbi Melrose making her first appearance in the doubles lineup and junior Emma Devine making her second appearance in singles play.
At No. 3 doubles, Melrose and freshman Christiana Brigante shutout Yvon Martinez and Kaja Mrgole 6-0 in their first match of the season together. At No. 1, Devine and freshman Malene Stripp defeated Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for Oklahoma.
In singles, Devine improved to 2-0 overall against Martinez at the No. 6 position by a score of 6-0, 6-3 to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead. At. No. 3 singles, Melrose also won in straight sets, defeating Chahal 6-1, 6-3.
“Emma did not look in the least bit short of match play today taking care of line six in commanding fashion,” said Mullins.
At No. 1 singles, Miyazaki continued a superb freshman campaign by defeating Mrgole 7-6, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Sooners. In the first set tiebreak, she prevented Mrjole from winning a single point. Her singles record now stands at 14-4.
Seeking 100
Saturday's win marked the 100th of Mullins' career at OU and overall. The milestone became just the latest of several recent accomplishments for the Sooners' head coach.
In 2014, Mullins led the Sooners to their highest ITA ranking ever, coming in at No. 14 the week of March 4. OU also reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in school history and the second time under Mullins. Oklahoma's success in 2014 would eventually lead to its highest ITA preseason ranking in school history, entering this season ranked No. 24. In addition, Mullins was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year in 2014.
