Women's Tennis Advances to Quarterfinals

WACO, Texas – The Oklahoma women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tennis Championships Thursday via a 4-0 win against the West Virginia Mountaineers at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The Sooners now lead the all-time series 4-0 and have outscored the Mountaineers 22-0 in the matches, which date back to 2013.
“The match went according to play,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “We played them last Saturday, so we are very familiar with them.”
The Sooners clinched the doubles point in dominating fashion at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2, the freshman duo of Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi prevented West Virginia's Habiba Shaker and Carolina Lewis from taking a single point, winning 6-0. At No. 3, senior Abbi Melrose and freshman Christiana Brigante defeated Kaja Mrgole and Yvon Martinez by a score of 6-2 and never trailed. When the Sooners took the doubles point, junior Emma Devine and freshman Malene Stripp were tied 4-4 with Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal.
In singles, Miyazaki continued her spectacular freshman campaign with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mrgole, improving to 15-4 overall and at the No. 1 position. Miyazaki holds a four match winning streak in matches that have finished. The win gave the Sooners their second point.
At No. 5, Stripp improved to 5-5 on the year with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lewis. It was Stripp's first finished match at the No. 5 position.
The Sooners clinched the match with a solid performance from their only senior in Melrose. She defeated Chahal 6-2, 6-4 and improved to 8-7 in the spring.
“The double matches were the same and five of the six singles matches were the same, so we had a pretty good idea going into it,” said Mullins. “It was a good performance, but it was what we expected.”
At the conclusion of the match, Sethi was tied 4-4 in the second set after winning the first set 6-3 against Barrett at No. 2. At the No. 4 position, Brigante lost a first set tiebreak, but held a 3-1 lead in the second set. Devine also lost her first set (6-4) but held a 5-4 lead in the second set.
