NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team is at home for four games in a five-day stretch beginning Tuesday night at 6:00 pm when the Sooners host Central Arkansas at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Oklahoma is 18-12 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play following a 1-2 weekend at Baylor. Junior center fielder Craig Aikin is coming off a four-hit day on Sunday and leads the Sooners with a .361 batting average. Junior Kolbey Carpenter ranks second on the team at .333 with 20 RBI and a team-high .546 slugging percentage. Redshirt-senior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh (.305) and sophomore shortstop Sheldon Neuse (.302) round out a group of four all hitting .300-or-better. Alspaugh is hitting .450 (9-for-20) in Big 12 games and Neuse has driven in a team-high 28 runs, while he and Carpenter have both gone deep five times. Redshirt-junior left-hander Adam Choplick (1-1) gets the nod against the Sugar Bears on Tuesday night. He owns a 2.21 earned run average and has struck out 25 batters in 20.1 innings.
It's “Tasty Tuesday” at the ballpark with $0.50 hot dogs and drinks. The game will also be the third Cane's Challenge of the season.
Scouting the Bears
Starting every game this season for a 14-8 Central Arkansas squad, outfielder Tyler Langley leads the team with a .360 batting average and has scored 19 runs and 27 hits. Fellow outfielder, Braxton Phillips, holds the team's season-high with five homeruns and 19 RBI. Freshman RHP Corey Herndon (0-0) is expected to start on a staff day for the UCA pitchers. He has made one relief appearance on the season with three runs allowed in one inning of work.
On April 1, the Sooners will be shaving their heads to support Vs. Cancer and fight childhood cancer. OU will host a public event at L. Dale Mitchell Park beginning at 5:00 pm. The team has surpassed its goal of $20,000 for the second straight season. Half the proceeds go to the Vs. Cancer Foundation and half to OU Children's Hospital. In 2014, the Sooners raised over $29,000 towards childhood cancer research.
The Sooners rank 11th in the country and second in the Big 12 with 28 double plays turned; averaging 0.93 per game. Oklahoma turned a season-high four vs. BYU (2/28). In 2014, OU turned just 28, averaging 0.48 per game.
